Or at least be offered. Heard Vanessa Redgrave and Albert Finney turned it down. Okay, my picks:
Sir Christopher Nolan Dame Kate Winslet Dame Rachel Weisz Sir Gary Oldman Sir Christian Bale (he'll be waiting a long time though, since he doesn't do stage and lives in America) Sir Daniel Craig Sir Idris Elba Sir Danny Boyle Sir Ewan McGregor Sir Jude Law Dame Olivia Colman Sir Sam Mendes Sir Guy Ritchie Sir Matthew Vaughn Sir Chiwetel Ejiofor Sir James MacAvoy

Or at least be offered. Heard Vanessa Redgrave and Albert Finney turned it down. Okay, my picks: Julie Christie and Glenda Jackson have also turned it down. I would think Helena Bonham Carter and Colin Firth would be so honored, not least because of their portrayals of the Queen's parents in The King's Speech.

Um if I have to call Ewan McGregor "Sir" I may shoot myself in the face ..........they'd be giving that to everyone then (nice guy I'm sure but......Ritchie too ) I'll say Cumberbatch and Fiennes who you could make best actors in all the mediums claims for them in their generations and are the right type ......

Knighthoods and Damehoods aren't always given to the "greatest" actors and filmmakers (though I'd say McGregor is very accomplished and better than you credit him) , even though it tends to seem that way. They also give it to entertainers who made a strong cultural impact, either in the UK or internationally. Neither Roger Moore nor Joan Collins are regarded as great actors (McGregor is far superior to both of them) but were knighted and damed for having popular careers. McGregor (along with Danny Boyle) defined British filmmaking for a generation in things like Trainspotting and Shallow Grave. McGregor has meant far more to the British film industry than someone like Bale or arguably even Gary Oldman (whose early impact was strong before the Hollywood dollar becknoned). And he's had longevity as a star and played iconic roles like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Christopher Robin. And he"s the most iconic Scottish actor since Connery. I'd say McGregor is probably in line to get knighted before several of the names I mentioned in my post. Ritchie as well. Had an extremely strong impact on British filmmaking with his cockney gangster stuff, and continues to have box-office success on a global scale (Sherlock Holmes films, Aladdin). Ritchie feels like a no-brainer at some point. Same for that guy who directed a bunch of Harry Potter films (David Yates). Success helps a lot.

I'll add one to Cumberbatch and Fiennes who I mentioned who is sort of in-between them and I don't think is as obvious yet as they are.
But I will call him way early and say he's a slam dunk unless something goes haywire. I recently covered him in the Best Actor/Actress Across Stage/TV/Film thread - Rory Kinnear.
He's constantly working across everything and in all 3 mediums - in popular stuff, niche stuff, he's already major in Shakespeare and he's pretty great at it (in Hamlet at least which I saw the broadcast of), if you check his resume he's particularly British and representative of it in what he plays and coveys in his characters.
I can't think of a more "British" actor at the moment at least than him ......

Oh, and the rate she's going, Cynthia Erivo seems likely, right? I'm not sure if she's moved to the US, though...

Danny Boyle was offered a knighthood for his work during the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony but he refused it, so maybe he never will.

I don't know what's up with Mike Leigh not being offered one yet.
Stephen Daldry, Imelda Staunton, and Tom Hardy have received the CBE. Timothy Spall has the OBE.
Not sure what the Python stances are. John Cleese refused the CBE apparently. Eric Idle, maybe. Michael Palin was knighted recently.
Technically a film person now, I guess, but regardless Dame JK Rowling is probably only a matter of time.

Can Australians receive knighthood/damehood? If yes I think Cate Blanchett definitely qualifies.

I hope they put " From Academy Award winner Sir Christopher Nolan" in the trailer for his next movie. 'Cause it sounds badass as hell.
