My choice has to be Ken Russell - hypnotic, delirious, erotic, gleefully over the top - there are too many adjectives to describe the films of this (wonderfully) depraved man! I just watched the giallo-esque The Lair of the White Worm ( Mattsby pacinoyes - have you guys seen this?) - it's equal parts awful and mesmerizing. Even if they're ultimately misfires, his films never fail to entertain. Russell with Richard Chamberlain and Glenda Jackson on the set of The Music Lovers. Who's your choice? (Please exclude directors like James Ivory, Stanley Kubrick, Joseph Losey, etc. - I'm looking for born and bred Brits here.)

I've seen Lair of the White Worm! I have to say I'm not a big fan of it but it's pretty out there I like some of Russell's stuff - The Devils I think is overpraised but has some staggering sequences - some of that I love. British directors...........Hitchcock count? Back to Russell I'd say you could have quite a lot of fun looking at how he and Nic Roeg (another Brit) used the bewitching Theresa Russell in films - sexually portrayed and the intellectual side of sex. I mean it's really fascinating to look at these two Brit directors, in a way, commenting on Brit sexual mores through a very (very) adventurous actress. That could be a (disturbing) thread idea

Hitchcock and Chaplin first of all.
Then I go with Lean, Attenborough, Nolan, Sheridan, Scot, Mendes, Boyle...
Maybe I'll come up with more later on. They are so many.

Chaplin, Hitchcock, Lean and Leigh. Chaplin probably over the others, though calling him a British film director is a stretch considering he learnt and became everything that he was way out west.

Hitchcock.
HM to Lean, Chaplin, Nolan, and Tony Richardson. Very generic picks for me.

My pick is cliche / predictable as hell but yeah its Christopher fuckin Nolan . I've been a huge fan ever since Memento (which was just brilliant and one imo one of the most clever films ever made). Then he changed the game with The Dark Knight (top ten all time fav film for me). Also a big fan of the rest of his impressive filmography. Can't wait to see what he has up his sleeves with Tenet!

I have to give a mention to Stephen Frears here as nobody else did. He has made some of my favorite films through the years (The Hit, The Grifters, High Fidelity, Dangerous Liaisons, Dirty Pretty Things etc.) and some may criticize him for doing "baity period films" more often than ever since 2005 but I do actually like many of those as well.

peter watkins by a pretty considerable margin, also my favorite communist director. everything he's done is so full of energy and passion, but takes itself and the ideas surrounding it deathly seriously.

Far from being a favorite of mine, but Michael Apted deserves a mention here, jus thanks to Gorky Park and Gorillas in the Mist.
