Hugh Grant is clearly a fan. I think she's a bit of a thespian lightweight (her daughter, Margaret Qualley, shows much more innate talent), but under the right direction she can be legitimately great - I personally nominate her for both S ex, Lies, and Videotape and Short Cuts. Strangely she seems to be more beloved in France than she is in the US? She's an annual fixture at Cannes and was awarded an Honorary César in 1997... Plus she's been a L'Oréal spokesperson for what seems like decades. Please, share your thoughts!

She's great in "Sex, Lies and Videotape" and most recently in "Love After Love". So clearly the talent is there, though I think she rarely got a chance to shine in most of her films. I mean I love "Four Weddings" but almost every other cast member is better than her. Very good in "Short Cuts" also but then again I prefer Moore, Leigh and Stowe over her.

Like her looks but she couldn't really act much - she's fine in some light stuff - the great Groundhog Day for one. She's likable. I actually think she does some of her best work opposite, John Malkovich in The Object Of Beauty. Malkovich in that film and I've talked about this a lot - conveys self-loathing in something that approximates a genuine masterclass of it - a lot of actors, big actors mentioned on here as "great" either can't convey that or don't think to even......he almost laps the field in how he incorporates this attribute at his best. This film is under a 6 on IMDB (wtf), no one ever mentions it, but she matches a very very good actor scene for scene and as a romantic comedy it gets into some real unpleasantness - she's kind of a bitch, he knows on some level she'd be with another guy if he couldn't afford her. I often point to this as an example of a box office bust that if you made it with more audience friendly stars (especially Malkovich) and shaved off the dark elements that made it interesting to begin with, it would have made a ton of money..........but alas........

Oh honey, because she's worth it!
I'll give her a nom for L'Oreal Vive... at least she uses her own hair (unlike Nicole).

She's beautiful and charming. As for her acting skills, I haven't seen that much of her but I liked her in SL&V, Green Card and the Player. I also think she's enjoyable in her more comedic parts, like Groundhog Day, Multiplicity, 5 Weddings and a Funeral.
It's a shame she hasn't done anything good in ages (haven't seen Only the Brave) but I guess that's a conversation we already had before about actresses in her 50s and 60s...
I just found out she'll be in a "4 weddings and a funeral" tv series. Don't know anything about that but maybe tv is the medium for her to start fresh.

Very limited actress but still managed to shine in very few films. Delivered her best work in both SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE and HARRIS SON'S FLOWERS.
That Honorary Cesar was a fucking joke though😑😑😑

That Honorary Cesar was a fucking joke though😑😑😑 Do you think L'Oréal paid for that? I'm assuming that too is why she's at Cannes every year.

Not an acting great, but she's fine enough for me. She was extremely charming and likeable in Groundhog Day, just as her role demanded and had a great chemistry with Bill Murray. I think I nominate her for her supporting turn in Short Cuts.

I just watched this yesterday - it may well be her best performance since 1989. The film itself is rather disjointed, but the acting is superb. MacDowell is so relaxed and natural in this - so often, actors play depression as totally one note - but MacDowell perfectly balances life's joys with its heartbreak - her character just feels so genuinely human. Loved her work here.

Loved her work here. Agree, I didn't particularly care for the film as it was bit messy but I was pleased to see her giving such a raw and impressive performance again. Certainly her most demanding role since "Sex, Lies..". Pity that it's very underseen but hopefully she'll get more of such meaty roles in the future.

Oh definitely. I dig her and she has aged liked fine wine too. Oh honey, I agree and think she has aged beautifully... a slight smattering of lines... but without looking like an elephant's ass. Gorgeous hair (clearly she's still worth it) and her teeth look to be her own. A least she doesn't look like an embalmed corpse with an overused loyalty card to Wayne's Wig World, like some actresses... naming no names... <Nicole>.

MsMovieStar - Oh honey, what do you think of the English cottage named "Tudor Rose" she had built in Asheville, North Carolina? Her neighbors are Vanderbilts, honey. She also has a rescue chihuahua named Ava Gardner. LaraQ Oh honey, have you ever seen a documentary called, 'The Queen of Versailles"? Who did she marry? She only did a couple of movies and a bunch of hair commercials... Ava Gardner, a dog? I'm liking her a lot less now that you've told me this... Because, She's not worth it!
That house is gorgeous. I hate her.

That house is absolutely gorgeous, albeit an American version of what an English Tudor house looks like. .And how refreshing to see a woman in their sixties who hasn't botoxed the crap out of their face, she looks great.

I finally saw The Object of Beauty, Mattsby and pacinoyes - thank you so much for recommending it. It's such a strange, funny little gem with two sterling performances from MacDowell and Malkovich (whom I usually can't stand and really freaks me out ) - really enjoyed it.

I find her very endearing and watchable for the most part -- quite good in Sex, Lies and Videotape, Dinner with Friends, Short Cuts and The End of Violence. Really good at both comedy and drama as well, most recently liked her stint on Cuckoo, she's a blast in Ready or Not and lots of fun in Magic Mike XXL.
