An exercise in humility is needed. the US didn't need to put on that onslaught. They essentially got their fans wearing red white and blue excited for doing really nothing than beating a team not even remotely decent. Teams like Thailand should not be allowed to compete here otherwise its just not really fair. At least Mallory gave some sparks of looking like the future of this team. I've been thinking about this after all the discussion it prompted and they've really got to to do something about it next time. That was just embarrassing. Whether it means contracting the field a bit so you only have solid teams or not showing as much preference to region and just letting in the best 24 teams in. I'm sure a team that narrowly missed qualifying from Europe or Latin America would have been miles better than Thailand. I know the US team is great, but if you lose to anyone 13 nil you have no business being in the World Cup. Well, 5 years ago I saw a team losing the male world Cup semifinal 7-1...

Boooo. I’m all for running up the score and I enjoyed every second of that 13-0 thrashing. Stomp on their throats, show no mercy, keep going for goals until the final whistle blows.

I didn't have a problem with them continuing to score the way some people did. Goal differential matters and it's not like it's little league baseball with a "mercy rule". The organizers should just try to raise the level of competition like I talked about in my post.

Don't think it's good to keep humiliating Thailand. We knew they weren't on the US's level, so kinda makes the onslaught pointless.
USA vs Sweden in 2 hours. Take an early lunch and watch this game, people.

Really disappointing for Australia. Sam Kerr just didn't have it today.
Norway's defense is probably better than what she faces in Australia and in the American soccer league. There's no weaknesses in the Norwegian team. Maybe a lack of overall standout goal scorers, but the athleticism, the total committed play, the strength and conditioning, and their cover wide abilities ..... as a whole unit Norway looks like the better team to me.
Good thing is that Kerr is only 25 - and she's already one of the most well regarded soccer players in the world. Gotta wait for this Australia team to get better. They weren't winning this year. Not with The US, France, England, and apparently Norway all better than they were last year. Gotta catch them in 2023 when some of them might be down.
It's unfortunate one of these two had to leave so early, but I guess that's gonna be the talk next week when one of France/US will be eliminated way before the bulk of the tournament.

Whoa.... that was one of the best games.
I think those epic France saves on what was sure goals, their fitness/conditioning, and their strong crowd was what slightly got them past Brazil.
Brazil was really good though. But France was just stronger in the middle - I think that was the difference.

1-1 at the half. Finally catching a game as it's airing, which is nice.

Not thrilled by the penalty call, but given the amount of shit Spain has gotten away with, I'll take it.

Ehhh.... The world perception of our team has gone down a lot. Europe is probably chuckling at us right now, giving them another reason to downgrade our country.
Tobin Heath... wtf. She made some of the slowest decisions I've seen. Pulled the ball back, and was really slow on where she wanted to pass. And she scored that beautiful goal against Sweden. Rapinoe usually toys with people out wide, but Spain didn't allow anything wide - and that meant we had to win some other way. Alex Morgan didn't look strong enough to play in a physical game like this. Again Mallory didn't play. She clearly was better conditioned to play a team like Spain and apparently Jill didn't see that.
Yeah.... We won 2-1, but it felt like 1-1 and should've went to OT. I do agree Spain fouls too much, takes us out by the legs, and goes straight in, I'm surprised we weren't sent to the hospital. But no excuses, France played better than we did yesterday. We both got a pretty good opponent and neither of us dominated, but France played better. We'll find out soon enough though.

France is gonna be tough at home with their fans presumably fired up about the prospect of holding both WC titles simultaneously.

I started watching this world cup from the round of 16 (out of curiosity more than anything else, because, even though I am a big fan of football, I hadn't watched any women's matches in the past). Here are my thoughts on the four matches I've watched so far:
Norway - Australia: This was a fantastic game. Great rhythm, great attacking play and high quality football by both teams, this was probably among the most entertaining games I've watched this year. Shame that one of these teams had to go home.
France - Brazil: Another entertaining game. I thought Brazil was the better team in the first 90 minutes, but some rushed choices in their attack and favorable refereeing for France kept the match even. In overtime the Brazilian team was clearly more fatigued, so the game naturally leaned in France's favour.
USA - Spain: Bad match. The attacking play by both teams was atrocious. USA is probably the softest team I've seen. They clearly didn't know how to respond to Spain's very physical game. And those penalties were a joke. In any men's game both would have recieved a yellow card for diving.
Sweden - Canada: The better team won. Canada had most of the possession, but clearly didn't know how to form any competent attacking play, while Sweden's couterattacks were fire. Honestly, they should have scored more than once.

Agree with pretty much every word. Canada don't have any standpoint goal scoring studs, imo. And the talk might be that their best player, Sinclair didn't take their only penalty kick (a call I didn't agree with anyways) that was missed, so we wonder if they're gonna regret that. I think the referees did bail the US out a little. That 2nd penalty was either a flop by Rose or she simply tripped as she landed. If it went to penalty kicks, US probably had the advantage and probably would've won anyways but Spain deserved at least a chance to prove that theory true or false. Agree that we're soft. We simply have a lineup full of more big names than any other team, and they can certainly implode any minute - but against Spain.... they were really not getting what they wanted. People can argue if we're as good as everyone says we are. I think France was better than Brazil. That first goal taken away because of collision with goalie should've counted, imo. France wouldn't have needed extra time. But no doubt they had the better conditioning. In fact that was the same thing with Norway. It might've been somewhat even in regular time, but in extra time.... the better conditioned and less gased team was the winning team in both instances.

urbanpatricianI think USA has the best units in ths world cup (from the match with Spain I could see that certain players on their team were very high quality, like Lavelle or Rapinoe for instance), but if they play this softly in their next match, I doubt they will advance to the semi-finals. France is a very physical team, can play quality football and, as the home nation, will be granted certain leeway in their tackling from the referee. If they don't play at the top of their ability and don't one up their physicality, I don't think they'll have much chance. The only certainty in this world cup so far is that women can play as well as the men (as was proven by that great Norway - Australia match), but also that penalty kicks are given way too easily and that the VAR is used way too frequently. I don't remember it being used even half this much in the men's world cup last year.

urbanpatricianBrazilian goalie already had her hands around the ball, so she cannot be pushed. Try to hold a ball when people are kicking it hitting your arms too, and you'll get a new perspective about the goalkeeper 's job.

She was attempting to make a catch, France was attempting to head the ball in. When a ball is in the air... both sides are allowed to pursue it. A goalie can use her hands, but the other team can only use their head. Both sides bumped heads, ball bounced loose and went it. It should've counted, imo. Gauvin was in a position to take more advantage though - to make one argument. She was charging, and her collision would've exerted more force than the goalie's would have. Because she was charging faster. It's not a 100% conclusive call, but I don't think anything should've been called there. Nobody had their ability to make a play impaired. Worst fouls in this tournament were let go.

Netherlands - Japan: Japan was clearly the better team, especially in the second half, and only lost to a very questionable penalty decision in the final stages of the game. I wasn't impressed by the Netherlands team at all. Their attacking play was way too passive and at times it even seemed that they were moving the ball around in slow motion.
