Forgive my ignorance if this is common knowledge, but as a huge fan of both of them, I just learned of this today - wanted to share. During her Hollywood/Warren Beatty days, Julie Christie became a very close friend of Sharon Tate's. (Double date!!!) - After finishing the filming of Far from the Madding Crowd, she thought Tate would be perfect for the role of another Hardy character, Tess Durbeyfield, and gave her a copy of "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" with the inscription, " For my Hardy heroine." Tate read the novel, loved it, and told Polanski what a wonderful film it would make. This was reportedly one of the last conversations the couple had before Tate's brutal murder. Polanski's eventual film would begin with the inscription "To Sharon."

Well I'm not the biggest Tate fan as an actress but I'm not the biggest Nastassja Kinski fan and she was just fine in that film. Polanski more or less captures the character through the actresses look and longing and sort of guides her through the trappings of that story. It's not really done in a way where the actress matters much but he could have done it a different way as a vehicle for her had she lived of course. It's a very strange case because no one really knows what Sharon Tate could have done as an actresses but what happened to her is what happened to Tess - ie circumstances of fate condemn her to death before any chance of happiness. It's spooky that Christie would recommend it in a way. I believe that when "To Sharon" comes up in Tess it comes and then sort of vanishes in the air as it scrolls upwards to the skies........that's what happened to both that actress and that character - they just vanished

pacinoyes - The only film I've ever seen Tate act in is Valley of the Dolls, in which I think she's more than fine, but obviously her beauty is the selling point of that role. I guess I'm more a fan of the person that she was, if that makes sense. Were you aware of her friendship with Christie?

I knew they were friendly because I'm a big Beatty fan - I always thought Beatty would have been really great in the Cassavetes role in Rosemary's Baby etc. (Cassavetes is great though too of course), and there's a sort of Nicholson-Beatty-Polanski friendship connection so it makes sense that Christie and Tate were friends of course too.
It's one of those weird things in Hollywood and in that era - a lot of things overlap and connect and weirdly don't at the same time - why didn't Polanski ever work with Beatty, why didn't Beatty ever work with Jane Fonda, why didn't Polanski work with Fonda (!!!) they are all around in the same period and at the same places and ........sometimes things happened or they didn't and it's kind of fascinating to mull over and think about.
To me, Tate reminds me of Marilyn Monroe more than anyone really. She wanted to be a better actress and worked hard at it too - that's why I say you never know. There's a famous video of her talking about being an actress and sex symbol that I'm sure you've seen.........very revealing and interesting that is.

Do you think the studio and producers are the problem why these ppl couldn't collaborate back at the time? I'm very intrigued why Redford and Beatty never worked together! Probably ray.........but some of the reasons people are or aren't in movies especially Warren Beatty movies - back then especially - is because they either had bad feelings for sleeping with him or good feelings about sleeping with him ......or weren't sleeping with him. Why is Natalie Wood not in Bonnie & Clyde - well I don't think she ever got over Beatty tbh - she would be like "wtf" we're not doing a movie together Warren! But Beatty would have been like "you're perfect for this part and we're old friends!" - I mean..........men, yanno? Jane Fonda is perfect for Bonnie & Clyde too, and also perfect for very many Beatty films - she did none of them..........she was gorgeous and political and a great actress too - she's a Beatty trifecta - and I don't think she was ever linked to Beatty either - in fact was married that whole time (twice) - so why is she not in a Beatty film - well because he was sleeping with Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Julie Christie probably .............and she didn't want to risk sleeping with Warren Beatty. It's basically the same reason why some dudes on this very board follow my every post, get mad when I don't like their favorite actors as much as they demand me to, get mad again when I rightfully call them trolls yet they still sleep with little pacinoyes dolls under their pillow which they love and hate and strangely desire more than anything in the world. Kidding/sorta.......

pacinoyes - Fonda assumed Beatty was gay, even after he propositioned her.

Pittsnogle_Goggins - So glad you enjoyed Tess. I wasn't sure if you'd be interested in the backstory as to why Polanski wanted make the film in the first place, but just wanted to share.
