By which I mean, in which an individual amassed 5 feature film credits or less in any of the major filmmaking disciplines (directing, producing, acting, scoring, writing, cinematography etc).
The individuals must no longer be active (either retired or dead). So for example you can't name an active director like Barry Jenkins, who has directed 3 feature films to great acclaim, but is still active.
Ok, few of my suggestions:
Directing
Charles Laughton
Acting
John Cazale James Dean

I'd like to submit Gary Poulter for consideration. Only one film to his credit, but I clock his performance in Joe as a true all-timer.

Pretty hard to argue with those picks but mine are these and this is sort of a cheat - not "best" clearly but interesting to discuss : I'd add one for directing James William Guercio - the director of cult film Electra Glide in Blue with a great performance by the tremendously underrated (and he is still the best Hoffa on-screen too) Robert Blake. Fascinating movie, even today .....he did nothing else in film and is mostly known for music work. For actors, one I list a lot is a guy who died before he even had the career at all. James Hayden - photos below - Pacino's co-star (in a star making role too) in 1984's Broadway production of American Buffalo, and DeNiro's co-star in a smaller role as one of the gang in 1984's OUATIA. He overdosed just as things were opening up for him. Mickey Rourke dedicates his Pope of Greenwich Village performance to him in the credits.

I'll take Poulter and raise you even higher: Maria FalconettiEnshrined as a landmark all-time film performance in The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, her second and final feature film.

Yeah, Falconetti and Poulter are the gold standards when it comes to careers that lasted fewer than three performances. I still think that if Rooney Mara wanted to get her Oscar, she needs to do a Falconetti biopic stat.

Here's 2 more known for the same landmark cult film Carnival of Souls - director Herk Harvey and star Candace Hilligoss.

Also, according to IMDb he comes in just under the wire: Harold Russell. His Oscar win is one of the finest in any category -- so good they gave him two for it! As is normal with every other actor, the director had a lot to do with shaping him, but what Russell brought to the table was absolutely titanic and it is a performance that resonates beautifully 70 years after the fact. But as Wyler rightly judged, there wouldn't be a whole lot of opportunities for an actor with no hands in Hollywood. Still, the kid had chops.

Still, the kid had chops. I really hope that was unintentional, and not a "missing hands" joke

Bob Fosse directed only five feature films. Can't argue with that. A brilliant career in 5 movies.

Rémy Belvaux - one of the masterminds behind directing the Cannes sensation of its day Man Bites Dog (a truly original film that almost 30 years old that still shocks and offends) - under 5 in both acting and directing before his suicide.

Yoshifumi Kondo only directed one masterful film. He did work as an animator for some decades (from at least Future Boy Conan to Princess Mononoke).
Satoshi Kon directed four movies and a TV show (with writing credits on a small handful more). Each of those five are at least good.

For directors I'd say Moustapha Akkad. He directed only two films and both are all time greats.

Actor : hands down James Dean . Director: Todd Field . I consider In the Bedroom to be my #1 fav film of 2001. Also, thought very highly of Little Children . He literally hasn't directed a film since 2006. Da fuck does this guy do all day??! I do see he has a few projects in development now though. Really hoping he at least gets Creed of Violence made.

Can't count Field, per the rules. Still active. His IMDB page shows he has two feature film in development ( one with Daniel Craig attached) as you pointed out. He's not retired. Just really lazy apparently. He's still got plenty of time left to make more than five films.

Almost . He appeared in 7 movies actually and not 5 or less Outside of Giant, Rebel Without A Cause and East Of Eden, all the other movies Dean appeared in, he was uncredited. So basically an extra. I think Dean can qualify for the 5 and under rule in those circumstances. A credited appearance should be a minimum requirement to count.
