I feel like this is Robbie's to lose right now because she's the "it" girl right now. Of course, I also felt like she would win for deglamming for Mary, Queen of Scots, and she wasn't even nominated for that.
So if not Robbie, I think Laura Dern could be a big threat for Untitled Noah Baumbach Project depending on how much Netflix really promotes the film. If they do really get behind it, I think it could be Dern's time given all the praise I've heard about her for it so far. Plus, she'll definitely campaign for it, she's also stayed on the awards radar with her television work, and she has Little Women as well so maybe some joint notices for both films from critics' groups.
Further, if Scarlett Johansson gets in for Jojo Rabbit, I've felt that she's someone that could win on her first nomination, but the problem is that she actually has to finally get nominated first. She'll also have a big year with Endgame and Untitled Noah Baumbach Project too.
If not those 3, probably someone from one of the fall festival films.

Emma Watson - How about that? Even a nod would be a surprise but you never know. Dakota Fanning - Supposedly she has a juicy part but I can't see her getting nominated. Annette Bening - I don't know if the film is that good in order to reach the Oscars. Laura Dern - A very fine actress and an Oscar long overdue. Margot Robbie - Maybe she'll be a lead. Then again, they'll probably place her in BS category so she has a good chance. Nicole Kidman - She has a very good shot imo. Scarlett Johansson - A very probable nod. Charlize Theron - Is she supporting? If so, then why not getting a nod at least...

Early word on Jojo Rabbit is that Thomasin Mackenzie is the MVP.I wouldn't be surprised to see her get a nom over Scarlett.

I think that Maggie Smith, pushed by Focus for Downton Abbey, has a shot at her third. But only if she campaigns.

This category is too early to call, but right now, I'd be looking at underrated or undervalued character actresses who have never won before. The Alison Janneys, Regina Kings and Melissa Leos of the world do really well in this category.
Laura Dern isn't super-underrated, but she's never been up there with the Cate Blanchetts and Nicole Kidmans of the world in terms of recognition. She's had a few good years recently, and feels like the kind of actress who would struggle to win in lead, but the Academy would fall over themselves to award in supporting. So Dern would be a good early horse to bet on for me.

I posted Maggie Smith as a big threat to win this in the Best Actor/Actress Across Stage/TV/Film thread at the start of the year and it got sort of dismissed .....but it's a big threat even if it's just good - she doesn't need to campaign even imo, she's repeatedly won the Emmy for that part, it's a big deal to many and let's get a little weirder too - Robbie for sure isn't winning - but 3 who might win are all 60+ Bening, Streep (in Little Women - she a double nominee possibility this year people, not predicting it but it is possible) and Smith.
If Pacino is worthy in The Irishman in Support you are looking at a 79 year old..........or Hanks also 60+ .........
The old people threat is a big problem in all categories this year, even if they don't win they're loitering around with their canes, talking endlessly about the weather etc.
