Cate The Great is my favorite, I have been closely followed her career since Oscar and Lucinda (long before the fanboys ), I knew instantly that she was one of a kind, she's is a mesmerizing talent. I have been less excited by the major part of her work post Blue Jasmine and if she keep getting outshined by the likes of Sandra Bullock and Awkwafina it won't work girl, I tell you, I might change of favorite ! Kidding, it's also good to see her try, do less serious/heavy stuff. That being said, I won't put her above Judy Davis yet, Davis is still the reigning Aussie Queen as far as body of impressive performances goes but she better watch out because Blanchett and then Kidman are just around the corner looking at the throne. Meryl can sleep confortably well when she sees the next generation of American actresses but Judy might have some hard sleep (j/k, hope she's proud of them). Honorable mention to the amazingly talented and beautiful Wendy Hughes, probably Davis main rival during the 80's, sadly she didn't had the luck to find her Woody Allen/Coen bro to possibly make it bigger overseas but she had it all. And I wish Rose Byrne would do less so-so comedies and more dramatic stuff, she's seriously talented, where is my girl from The Goddess of 1967 ?? Blanchett is great. I think she's just a more advanced version of Davis though (similar presence with more Streep-ian technique attached). Kidman is more unique....she understands the nuances of film acting better than any Australian actress I've seen. Maybe as well as any actresss ever. Blanchett (And Davis) tend to always give big, expressive, commanding performances. Kidman can as well, but she understands the power of stillness on film. That you can also achieve more with less. It's more a quality seen in certain European actresses like Huppert. I struggle to see the other ladies pulling off performances like Birth or The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. I see a similar quality in Denzel. He can go big or small, as required. Stillness or power. Wheras Blanchett is more like DiCaprio...DiCaprio is a great actor, but he doesn't do stillness. But like I said, even though I favor Kidman and think she can basically do more, I see both Blanchett and Kidman as GOAT contenders and near equals. As a pairing stature-wise, they are like DeNiro and Pacino, if they were female and didn't end up disappointing you.

At some point, (hollywood) Aussies tend to work together, Sam Neil, Hugo Weaving, Russell Crowe, Geoffrey Rush...all have acted with at least 2 (often 3) of these actresses, earlier in an Australian film or in Hollywood but them together, never (as I can tell). But the Kidman/Crowe pairing that everybody wanted in the early 00's when both were at the top of their game finally just happened last year, so there is still hope. Time will tell.

People a little perspective please - finest actress in Kangarooland doesn't make any of them GOAT level - that's a 2 person race for a long time now and for all I know........... Streep may be next in line to kiss the ring. Geesh........carry on lads, carry on .......

She's behind both the Australians. Winslet is a great actress, but both the Aussies are capable of much more. I'm also a big proponent of stage acting, which Winslet has never done at a professional level. Kidman is a two time Olivier Award nominee and Blanchett a Tony nominee. Both can be fairly considered great stage actors.

They are friendly and admire each other (I even suspect Blanchett's move into TV producing has been influenced by Kidman). But both are capable of getting projects off the ground by themselves, and seem to have a lot on their plates right now. But both their careers are at a high enough point today where them doing a movie (or TV series) today would be a major event. Impressive for two ladies at 50+.

Looks like Cate Blanchett is winning this thread. Good for her! Carol is probably the best performance of the 10's.

From what I've seen, which is admittedly fairly limited, gotta go with Kidman.

Gosh....I forgot to mention....your wish for Rose Byrne is about to come true. Byrne is going to be playing Gloria Steneim opposite Cate Blanchett in the 10 part FX TV series, "Miss America". I think shooting is about to begin, if it hasn't started already. You are right about Byrne though. She's one of those actresses that seem to have everything, but got stuck in a limiting niche.

I was reading about her in a book about Broadway theatre and she was just as good as Katherine Cornell and Tallulah Bankhead. She was great as Mrs Danvers in Rebecca. I love Toni Colette. How could we have forgotten her? She consistently delivers. Blannie has seven Academy Awards nominations and two Oscars - a first for an Australian actress. Surely she's the successor to Streep and Kate Hepburn's crown. I could see her ending her career having broken all all time awards records... She surpassed so many actresses in such a short time.

But Kidman needs to be placed between Davis and Blanchett. She paved the way for Australian actresses becoming major stars on the international stage before Blanchett. Kidman transitioned from acclaim in Australia as a tv and film actress, in the 80s and early 90s, to Hollywood superstardom in the 90s. She then received major acclaim as a stage and film actress in the late 90s and early 2000s. Whether you like her or not, she is a very significant Australian actress.

Even Blanchett has admitted in an interview that Kidman helped pave the way for Australian actresses like her. Joel Edgerton said the same thing while promoting Boy Erased. Not that awards are the be all and end all, but Kidman remains the only Australian actress to win both an Oscar and and Emmy (a distinction shared on the male side by Geoffrey Rush). I do expect Kidman to be a triple crown winner and win a Tony. She might already be, if she didn't listen to her kids and avoid a Broadway transfer of her phenomenonally successful 2015 UK West End production of Photograph 51 (which got her her 2nd Olivier Best Actress nomination, and her 2nd Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress In A Play). Broadway wanted the play, and she basically turned it down after her little girls weren't happy about her doing another run of the play.

For those interested : all 3 of the big ones here have appeared in my beloved "Best Actor Actress Across Stage/TV/Film" thread (best thread ever ) too in detail - Davis just the other other day. Davis hasn't left Australia much to do theater but was an Olivier nominee herself for Insignificance in her stunning 80s run of work........has done a lot in Australia to acclaim. Blanchett also has done a lot there too but branched out in one Broadway play and London and a very great The Maids with Huppert at Lincoln Center also. Kidman has done London twice to very strong notices- a bit less Australian theater for her. Nicole Kidman would have had a tough time in the 2015/16 Tony seasons beating Mirren in an Olivier award winning role (The Audience) and Lange the next season too (in Long Days Journey Into Night) though possibly Lange could have been overtaken. Those wins by the way allowed both Mirren and Lange to become Triple Crown winners themselves.

Kidman's stage career is fascinating. She's essentially a stage prodigy. Made her professional stage debut at age 14 as Wendla, the lead role in Spring Awakening. Heavy duty stuff for a teenage actress. Kidman was basically discovered through that play. Jane Campion saw Kidman's performance, said she was blown away and tried to cast her in a short film. Kidman turned it down, but her and Campion stayed in touch. But I think much of her early Australian Film and TV castings came through her run in Spring Awakening.
Then in 1988, she did Steel Magnolias and won the Sydney Theatre Critics Best Supporting Actress award. She's not super prolific onstage, but seems to have an insane aptitude and talent for it. Every time she does it, it's major in her career. She's classically trained which helps.
She was nearly signed up to do Sweet Bird Of Youth on Broadway a few years back opposite James Franco, but that fell apart for some reason.

We have to be careful with this comparison stuff and not go to far with it with minor awards, parts not played, etc. because Australia is a small country/continent/modern-day scary dinosaur haven whose theater and film critic bodies are comprised only of people who can actually withstand a kangaroo pouncing on their stomach for an hour. For example and not referencing anyone's post but ..............remember the Sydney Theatre Critics go back to 2005 only. Prior to that they were a circle only (seriously). See if you can find their "winners" listed anywhere online because I actually can't. When they were a circle it was comprised of 2 men, 2 women and 3-4 wallaby's depending on which gave birth. In this link below Kidman for example didn't win anything for Steel Magnolias (nodded for something else?) but she may have. Is that true that she didn't win? I dunno can't find it online AND the wallaby's ATE their f'n ballots for Godsakes so we may never know. But even if she did win.....we should probably GTFO because those cute little koalas are pissed and besides that's not a knife............THIS is a knife. www.isikeynes.it/ipertesti/movie_minds/Mrs.Dalloway/THE%20ACTRESSES%20THE%20HOURS.htm

It's just too bad her pesky children keep asking mommy to spend time with them, she would have won like 5 Tony Awards if they just left her alone, surely.

Point stands that every time Kidman has been on stage, it's been acclaimed and been major in her career. And she was doing it from a young age. Even in Australia. The Sydney Critics Theatre Circle is/was a big deal to Australian theatre (I think I recall reading that she won in a biography, but even a nomination is major in that country). That it's less of a big deal compared to London or New York is self-evident and not the point. Whether it's a nomination or a win, it's a major acknowledgement of her early theatre craft.
So, much ado about nothing (a play I wouldn't mind seeing Kidman in. She'd make a fine Beatrice)

I think there is a little bit of ignorance going on here. The Sydney Critics Theatre Circle is a major awards body for Australian theatre and has been around for decades.
The Sydney Theatre Awards was formed in 2005 by those in the circle to give a more formal, glitzy ceremony to the proceedings, but the same body has been handing out Awards and nominations for decades previously.
It's always been the biggest deal theatre award in Australia (as Sydney is the equivalent of London or New York for the Aussie theatre scene). Cate Blanchett winning in 1993 for Kafka's Dances announced her as a major Australian stage actor. I don't downplay the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle acknowledgment for Blanchett. That was as big as it could get for an Australian stage actress.

Well, you know how it is as you pointed out with all your hilarious koala and kangaroo jokes (haha, Oz is so basic). Those backwards Aussies haven't managed to work out the intracies of the internet to put together a coherent database of decades worth of winners of one of their preeminent theatre prizes. Bloody Drongos! The lazy Gallahs!!! I bet the the names of the winners are all in a file cabinet somewhere in a Sydney pub. Good hunting my friend.

This is really insulting. I don't find your use of those cultural stereotypes amusing or pertinent to the discussion. You have taken this thread from comments on Australia's greatest actress, to denegrating remarks on Australia in general. I hope this is motivated by a dislike of Kidman or some grudge with the other user, rather that being you actual opinion of Australia. Either way, it doesn't really motivate me to engage with discussion on this board.
