I never cared for Shane. The kid was unbelievably annoying, Alan Ladd felt like a prop instead of a person, and considering much of the film hinges on the relationship between those two characters it just didn't work for me. Aside from the gorgeous cinematography, Logan did everything better.

I've not seen Logan, so I wouldn't know. I also don't think Shane is that great.

I'd recommend you check it out.

TIL Spectre>Skyfall, and by a significant margin. Pulpy ridiculous fun beats technically polished, glossy, self serious bore any day of the week.

I am hopelessly allergic to Robin Williams. I don't even like him in 'Good Will Hunting.' There, I said it.

Some movie related ones:
Drive is Refn's worst film that I've seen so far DCEU > MCU Watchmen is the best comic book movie ever made (don't know how unpopular this is tbh) Rob Reiner's North is a good movie BvS is a good movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid and its sequels are good movies For a Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars, and Once Upon a Time in the West are all meh Spielberg is an incredibly average director Three Colors: Red is the worst in the trilogy Inland Empire > Mulholland Drive Documentaries are generally less interesting to me Léon: The Professional is absolute garbage

I don't particularly really like either. I am not sure I would take pseudo-intellectual edge over lifeless vapid products. Watchmen is the best for sure. I agree. N/A It is okay. I would say despite how messy it is, it is more on the good spectrum. N/A Once Upon a Time in America is A LOT better than those three. I would say it is almost more contrarian these days for a cinephile to call him a great director. I would say White is. I like both but I like Mulholland Drive more but lately, I can't help but view the first eighty or so minutes as a TV show pilot that never took off because that is all it is. I am thinking you just haven't seen the great ones. This is a curious one for me. I have seen a lot of people downright hate Léon, so I must ask, why is it absolute garbage?

-Film noirs are generally incredibly uninteresting and formulaic.
-There is more bias for Hitchcock and Kubrick than any other director around. They get away with stuff other directors get their ass kicked for. On the opposite side of that coin, they also get criticized for some of the stupidest things. Tired of hearing "emotionally cold" for Kubrick as I am "entertainment but not art" for Hitchcock. Full Metal Jacket's 2nd act is superb, and the majority of Hitchcock's endings are fine for me, Psycho aside.
-The Notebook doesn't do anything much different than what Gone With the Wind does. Both are sensationalist emotion-jerking movies designed to please sentiment. What's the difference again?
-Macho actors (DeNiro, Pacino, Bogart, Eastwood, Bridges, maybe Cruise and even Wayne, Ahnuld, Stallone, and Willis) are the best. THE BEST. Displaying masculinity is the coolest thing anyone can do.
-Avatar (6/10) is not in any way a great movie. But again, stupidest complaints ever. Calling it derivative is lazy, inarticulate, and does not narrow down the hundreds of other derivative movies. By calling it Dances With Navi....so? I'm pretty sure we all realize that.
-McAdams > Hathaway
-Waterworld (6/10) is also not great, but I don't see what the first two Mad Max movies do that's so different and better.
-James Stewart and Marlon Brando aren't really OMG great. But they're very good. I admit brilliance and career changing performance in It's a Wonderful Life, and Brando did kill it in Last Tango in Paris. Brando also is a very underrated camp actor in Apocalypse Now, and Stewart fits the mold of screwball romps very well. But I just feel that "their act" starts to get revealed when you dig a little bit deeper into their filmography. I never know why people don't bash Stewart and Brando for that when they're always ready with their fists to slam Bogart for the same. Give me Bogart's act anyday.
-Robert DeNiro remained at the top of his game into the 90s. In Cape Fear and Casino and Heat, he was capable of still playing exceedingly entertaining leading men, doing a maniac in Cape Fear way better than Hopkins did in SOTL, and his ability to make his characters closest to human as possible is on full display in Heat.
-Richard Linklater is the cinematic equivalent of a mediocre indie rock band. A completely nothing special director and Before Sunrise is stupid 13 year old girl fantasmo with actors who look 16 serenading in a CD shop to some homemade pop music. I haven't seen Boyhood though.
Come at me, ya bitches.

Come at me, ya bitches. I think it is fun to respond to people listing differing opinions so that I can voice my ultimately meaningless thoughts. Here goes: I really need to see more noir films to get a better handle on the genre but I wouldn't say they are all formulaic. I think something like Ace in the Hole stands among the good ones. I won't lie though, the main reason I haven't seen enough noir films is that simply put, I agree that they are boring. Yeah, I agree and I really like both of them. I finished his filmography, and the "emotional cold" argument only really applies to 2001: A Space Odyssey in my opinion, and even then, it isn't even a criticism. I think Kubrick consistently displays humanity and emotional depth in all of his not already mentioned post- Killing films. I think what separates the two is that Gone with the Wind has a larger scope and bigger stakes. Also, I think audiences have different standards today than they did in the 1930's in terms of emotional manipulation, although they like the old films like Gone with the Wind for being a classic or whatever. I think Gone with the Wind is a more fleshed out story overall, although it is about twice as long as The Notebook. Notebook relies too heavily on narration to move the story, but then again so do some Scorsese films. I do think guys hate on The Notebook for juvenile reasons, and even though I am not big on it, I think the film still has some things to offer. I really liked how cute the two were when they were non-stop flirting towards the beginning, it really reminded me of a past relationship. On a weird note, James Garner died in real life literally as I watched the film. Not sure what this means but a number of those are some charming screen presences. Yeah, Avatar utilizing a familiar story was the intention. Nobody gets upset at Kurosawa for making King Lear in Japan, yet it is a problem that Avatar is that same familiar story. McAdams is definitely better. This is unpopular? n/a Disagree with the Brando criticism. Nothing to add about this one except I didn't know that was an unpopular opinion. The more films I see, and the older I get, the less I like Linklater tbh.

I am thinking you just haven't seen the great ones. This is a curious one for me. I have seen a lot of people downright hate Léon, so I must ask, why is it absolute garbage? Totally agree Once Upon a Time in America is easily Leone's best. One of my all-time favorites. I know I'm probably missing a lot of great documentaries, but I find it very difficult to get into them. Full disclosure about Leon: I haven't seen it in a while, and my memory could be distorted because I had very high expectations for it at the time, but I thought it was extremely messy, horribly paced, and awkwardly written. It didn't deliver emotionally or tell an interesting story IMO. The chemistry between the two leads felt shallow and forced. The acting (save Portman) was mediocre. I mean, it's a well made movie and is probably not deserving of the hatred I have for it, but it was so forgettable, cartoony and predictable, and the fact that it is so loved kinda bothers me. I could see in an alternate reality liking the movie for its sheer strangeness and oddball approach, but it really didn't work for me at all.

Gwtw isn't a love story, unless you consider Tara as Scarlett 's love interest. As her father said, Do you mean to tell me, Katie Scarlett O'Hara, that Tara, that land doesn't mean anything to you? Why, land is the only thing in the world worth workin' for, worth fightin' for, worth dyin' for, because it's the only thing that lasts.

I still think of John Ridley first and foremost as the writer of Undercover Brother instead of as the Oscar-winning writer of 12 Years a Slave.

Spielberg's only two great films are:A.I and Munich, the rest pretty much sucks.
Biutiful is Inarritus best film.
Assassins Creed is a much better action film than Mad Max Fury Road
The Martian is the worst film of 2015.
David Thomson is a much better film critic than Brody, at least, Thomson doesn't take himself very seriously.
James Gray has made only one great film: Two Lovers.
Miami Vice is Mann's best work
Godard hasn't made a single bad film in his career.
