I am already all over on here calling Williams best of her generation and that includes Lawrence too (born 1990) - when this is all said and done, people will wonder why this was ever a debate imo. I don't think she's peaked yet either......

In terms of sheer capability and range that I've seen, I vote for Ruth Negga. Emma Stone's on her heels, though.

What Dunst did on Melancholia is yet to be reached by her peers, so that's my pick.

Surprised Rooney Mara hasn't received more support here.

Lots of "good" actresses here, but feels like a pretty ordinary generation if I'm comparing it to ones that came before (the Streep/Close/Lange generation or the Kidman/Blanchett generation).
Blunt of this bunch probably, though it's not like there is anyone clearly head and shoulders above the field. I've said it before, but she is at least as good as Amy Adams, yet can't score Oscar nominations with the ridiculous ease of the latter. Dunst might be a decent pick as well.

Dunst I think is my favorite of the bunch, at least she has the highest heights, though she's been way too quiet as of late. Stone isn't far behind at all and she maybe has the most interesting versatility of this group. Then rounding out my top five would probably be Williams, Mara, and Negga.

What Dunst did on Melancholia is yet to be reached by her peers, so that's my pick. I think you can add Fargo as well, that's an impressive top 2 performances that would be hard to beat by any others actresses mentionned. She had a couples of very good works earlier in her pre-adult career ((Interview with the Vampire, The Virgins suicides) but she really has grown and became a much more interesting actress in this decade starting with All Good Things. She's one of the best and (despite Cannes) still underrated.

I couldn't see myself saying this 10 years ago, but... Portman.

It's actually bizarre to think about how an actress this accomplished - with success on european festivals and prestige-TV, with auteur liasons, who's been there forever, etc - still feels like is on the verge of happening. I wonder what else has Dunst to do for people - the general public and industry - to realize the amount of talent and star quality she's got.

Stone and Mara feel like the right picks, but I almost voted for Mulligan too.

From that list I'd probably say Keira Knightley. But for me the best three are Jun Ji-hyun, Yu Aoi and Emilie Dequenne.

Eva Green is the best of the lot in terms of pure talent while Emma Stone is more consistently good but Rooney Mara is my personal favorite.

Portman and Knightley are my favorites from the list.
Dunst and Emma Strone are close second.

I don't think she's peaked yet either...... I'm sort of surprised that no one else has mentioned Williams yet. Her career has just been astounding to me. When I use to watch her on Dawson's Creek, I always thought she was the best of the cast, but then she kept topping herself after she left that show with hardly any missteps. I agree that I don't think she's peaked yet either. Not that awards mean that much, but still I'd like to see her win at least one Academy Award someday. I just feel she makes it seem so easy that they'll ignore her until it's too late. Although she would have won for Manchester by the Sea had Viola Davis gone leading, or if Davis had already won for The Help.

Kristen Dunst obviously.
I’ve seen very little mention of Anne Hathaway and that makes me sad. I think she’s crushed it in a pretty wide variety of roles, can carry a film and has genuine depth and range. She’s an old school movie star. Her public image took a hit with her Les Mis campaign, but I think she’s getting back to business. She completely stole the show in Oceans 8, is leading the new Dees Rees and Todd Haynes films. I’m excited to see where her career goes.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Michelle Williams doesn’t have talent, but she’s generally not my cup of tea. Lifeless, nothing screen presence, too weepy and bland for my taste most of the time.
I can see a case for Emily Blunt and I think she is pretty consistently good, but I think she’s become a martyr with the Oscar snubs and I think it’s caused a little more affection towards her work than what’s deserved. She was awful in Girl on the Train and merely serviceable in Sicario for instance. Way too put together and posh for a role like the former. She can do well in dramas, but I think she’s definitely a bit more consistent in lighter fare like Into the Woods, Prada, Poppins, ect which has undoubtedly played a part in her lack of Oscar success.

Stone and Mara's vote count is hilarious. Stone has been good in some things but I don't think she's even close to the best of this very good group. Mara is my third favorite of them and if someone wanted to put her no. 1 I wouldn't argue. She's very, very good.

Vikander. Why 0 votes????!!! My vote is for her potential more than anything else. I simply think she has the greatest potential of all of these, although lately she's just been doing Sci-fi and money making stuff.
Don't think any of the others are THAT great. I mean yeah... logically Portman, Stone, and Williams should be the best among THOSE, but none of those compare to the ones born in the 70s. Least of all stupid Hathaway.
Kinda agree with Allenism on Rooney Mara. She was looking like the hottest Hollywood commodity, but she's done NOTHING since Carol, and hasn't been nearly that interesting as originally hyped. Her project choices are terrible. At least Vikander is doing movies people kinda care about. Nobody cares about anything Mara has been doing lately disposing them as they see them. Haven't seen A Ghost Story though. I'm confident she'll make a comeback in the early 2020s but her late 2010s has been really forgettable.

I voted for Williams and Portman. Surprised to see that Scarlett still has no vote, is it possible that even here people think she is a bad actress? I just did not vote for her and Dunst because I could only select two options.
I think that Elizabeth Olsen, Lea Seydoux, Evan Rachel Wood, Amanda Seyfried, Bryce Dallas Howard, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Olivia Wild and Rebecca Ferguson should have been included in the list ......
I agree that the actresses born in this decade are a bit weak compared to those of the 1970s, but I think one of the reasons is because most of them only had their breatkhrough in the beginning of this decade, so we'll see how their careers will be in the next decade. ...
