3rd one is the best episode so far. I hate Camille's mom with passion but I'm starting to like Camille more though. 'Black, Coffee and Winter?' Same tastes as mine.

Best episode so far. Amy's really great in this one. One more episode to go.

Solid episode but the ending was abrupt though the twist was unexpected. I'm thinking they deliberately put the 'Persephone' thing just to give a clue if anyone wants to go back and re-watch it or they might have planned that all along. It wasn't clear.
Amy's great as usual but the girl who played Amma gradually gave a really good performance. In retrospect i see this as a muddled southern gothic drama.

I didn't see the twist coming at all so I literally jaw-dropped. That was actually very well-planned with the ivory floor.

I gave up after the third episode. Gillian Flynn and I just do not get along.

Even after reading the book, the very end really got me. That was a masterfully executed final twist that I imagine would really rattle someone going in fresh.
Overall, I really liked this miniseries. I occasionally found it too slow and meandering, but Vallée's distinct style really meshed well with the material, and Amy Adams was at her near-best throughout.
Series rating: 8/10

Which actors are you expecting to be Emmy-nominated for this? I could see any combination of the following (Adams and Clarkson are locked, right?):
Eliza Scanlen Chris Messina Elizabeth Perkins Taylor John Smith Matt Craven
Who are you thinking?

I liked the book which was a very solid and defining debut for Gillian Flynn. What I loved about the series is that it is one of the most perfectly cast shows or adaptations in general like ever. Every character in the film is just how you imagine them from reading the novel. Amy Adams gives ones again a tremendous performance that surely had been an Oscar role for her if it had been a feature adaptation as originally planned. She should be a shoe in for Golden Globe and Emmy however. A great well layered performance that finally and after all gets her nice girl next door image away. Patricia Clarkson is perfectly cast as the mother. What a fantastic casting gig. The performance did not always work for me as she was sometimes overacting and campier than the characters asks for but still a decent performance in the end. The best performance besides Adams or even a top of Adams came from Australian now comer Eliza Scanlan who will have a bright future. She was absolutely right for Amma and totally understood and interpreted that character. A fantastic break through turn. Finally Matt Craven gets a large and juicy role to put his teeth into. Really enjoyed him and he also was just as you imagined the role to be from the book. Chris Messina was okay and possibly the weakest of the main ensemble. Elizabeth Perkins had her moments but it was a bit distracting that they made the role larger than I remember it from the book. The show had a fantastic soundtrack and wonderful direction by Jean-Marc Vallée. He has a perfect feel for his actors and characters. Its not as mind blowing as Big Little Lies but another great movie like limited mini series by him. The twist at the end is pefeclty put into scene.
8/10

I'm very late to the party, but Eliza Scanlen deserves every little bit of praise for her performance in this. Give the girl all the awards.

Oh man, Adams' pics from the set are out there today and they are killing my excitement for this. I was hoping at least, since it's pretty much given with her she does her usual shtick of breathing and simply existing on the screen, she would at least change her look to look the part. But nope. This is gonna be several hours of her little NA scene with Laura Linney Yikes. This post aged badly.

Finally watched it... preeeeeeeetty great.
Definitely drawn out, but Vallée's style (mainly the editing and cinematography) makes the runtime close enough to earned.
Adams carries it strongly, Scanlen was great, Clarkson had her moments but I think other actresses could have done a lot more with the role, Messina I think is one of the most reliably solid actors out there and here was no different, aaaaaaaand I'd say Elizabeth Perkins was MVP tbh. More than anyone, she seemed like she fit her character and the world of the show the best. Shoutout to Taylor John Smith for some strong moments as well, and Miguel Sandoval for playing simultaneously the best and worst boss ever.
I read the book over 5 years ago and didn't remember much outside of the basics of the plot and of course the ending... and while watching it I was regretting reading it because I thought knowing the ending might lessen the series' impact... but hoooolllllllly shiiiiiiit the ending is so well executed that knowing it beforehand didn't mean shit. Definitely one of the best TV moments of the decade.
Probably an 8/10... and it's clear Vallée should do nothing but HBO miniseries from here on out.

I kinda loved it much to my surprise given how little interest I had in watching it. Slow burn, yes but so engrossing. Top notch performances by everyone especially Amy Adams. Probably my second or third favorite performance of hers. Such a complex role so beautifully portrayed where she makes her character more than just a drunk hopeless psycho. She makes Camille so likeable and you feel for her esp when she finds out the truth. Her face when she faces the killer while holding the tooth is heartbreaking to watch. And it's an absolute travesty than Scanlen wasn't nominated for a single award. She should have won the whole damn thing. Such a genuinely great performance. I am a fan. ❤️ Oh, and Messina is hot! Can totally ser people hating it but certainly worth a try. I am so glad I watched it.

Doing Emmy catching up, and god DAMN, what a chore Being slow doesn't make you deep or complex, and the first 6 episodes of this thing could have been condensed into maybe 3, then it only comes to real life with like 5 minutes to go in the penultimate episode where it suddenly decides to transform from Season 1 of True Detective into Lost with its fucking twists. I like how they put that bit in the credits of the final episode JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET IT! Still, as someone who got sick of Amy Adams the better part of a decade ago, this was the most I have ever liked her in anything since certainly The Master, maybe Enchanted.

Watched this a few months ago.... I'm in the minority, I kinda liked it but hated a lot of it too, 6/10. Adams gets the self-loathing down but not the edginess or the sarcasm or being a reporter. I think she’s wrong for the part actually, I agree with Viced that Riley Keough might’ve been better - she has a regular, slightly off, stoic quality that’d work. Patricia Clarkson gives an awkward and distracted perf, and Scanlen while very good the character was extremely grating. I thought those two telegraphed too obviously that they’re, y’know, wicked - I suspected them the entire series, and well...... Other than being predictable to me there are too many dumb writing decisions, I didn’t buy Scanlen’s mommy issues she seemed very comfortably independent, Adams never meeting her sister before?, taking the poison, sleeping with the guy, etc. Vallee keeps the tense tone kicking but also uses his elusive editing style too much, starts to feel like a crutch. (aside: Ep1 of his BLL is a complete editing botch, though the rest of the season smooths out better this became a crucial problem of S2, where the prismic style attempt plays as strained repetitive filler) MVPs - Elizabeth Perkins and Matt Craven, the sheriff aka Sean Penn’s republican brother
