I just realized no one's mentioned Nena's "99 Luftballons" yet so I'm gonna correct that oversight. The song's conflation of childlike toys and imagery (red balloons) with nuclear annihilation is extremely potent and recalls scenes of abandoned apartment blocs. The song was released in '83 at the height of the Cold War and Chernobyl would occur only three years after its release so for some the song was sadly prescient.
Prefer the English version because the German version is gibberish to my ignorant American ears and I love the lilt of Nena's accented performance. It just sounds great. Especially love the ending portion of the song. Always crushes me.
"99 dreams I have had In every one a red balloon It's all over and I'm standin' pretty In the dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenir Just to prove the world was here And here it is, a red balloon I think of you and let it go"

"Judges will haunt you, the country priestess will want you Her worst is better than best I've seen all these decoys through a set of deep turquoise Eyes, and I feel so depressed China doll, alcohol Duality, mortality Mercury rules you and destiny fools you Like the plague, with a dangerous wink And there's no time to think
Your conscience betrayed you when some tyrant waylaid you Where the lion lies down with the lamb. I'd have paid off the traitor and killed him much later But that's just the way that I am."

This is one of the saddest, most lovely songs ever written.
Time marches on Time stands still Time on my hands Time to kill Blood on my hands And my hands in the till Down at the seven-eleven
Gentle rain Falls on me All life folds back Into the sea We contemplate eternity Beneath the vast indifference of heaven
The past seems realer than the present to me now I've got memories to last me When the sky is gray The way it is today I remember the times when I was happy Same old sun Same old moon It's the same old story Same old tune They all say Someday soon My sins will all be forgiven
Gentle rain Falls on me All life folds back Into the sea We contemplate eternity Beneath the vast indifference of heaven
They say "Everything's all right" They say "Better days are near" They tell us "These are the good times" But they don't live around here Billy and Christie don't Bruce and Patti don't They don't live around here I had a girl Now she's gone She left town Town burned down Nothing left But the sound Of the front door closing forever Gentle rain Falls on me All life folds back Into the sea We contemplate eternity Beneath the vast indifference of heaven

Joaquim - since we're dissing Jacksonville today .........this song is about a shitty gig he played there where no one showed up and he was treated bad by some venue and how his career sucked and it bummed him out - though I'm sure he actually did play it after. Good song and of course he made one of Rock's great albums when he was younger "Squeezing Out Sparks" (1979) Two young girls were swept down the culverts in the rain St. Petersburg was flooded again I reached my hand out for them but I watched them slip away And I had to get up to Jacksonville that day
I don't need anyone to remind me I don't get the big picture I don't need anybody to find me Hangin' from a lighting fixture and
I'll never play Jacksonville again I'll never get on that southbound aeroplane They gave me a ticket pointed me south Gave me five hundred bucks to shut my mouth
I'll never play Jacksonville I'll never have that weird thrill I'll never play Jacksonville again, again
The road was like a river, the fields were like the sea The thunder clouds were closin' in on me I gunned that motor onward up route 1-95 Checked my pulse, yep, still alive
I don't need anyone to remind me To take my hand out of a fire I don't need anybody to find me Tied up with piano wiring
I'll never play Jacksonville again I'll never get on that southbound aeroplane They gave me a ticket pointed me south Gave me five hundred bucks to just shut your mouth
I'll never play Jacksonville I'll never have that weird thrill I'll never play Jacksonville again, again
They put me on at the milk bar and said, ?Hey, good luck, kid Here's your Jagermeister, here's half a lid? Put the past behind you, it's over, pay your bill This is where it ends now, Jacksonville
I don't need anyone to remind me I'm on the end of a skewer I don't need anybody to find me Floatin' around in the sewer
I'll never play Jacksonville again I'll never get on that southbound aeroplane They gave me a ticket pointed me south Gave me five hundred bucks to shut my mouth
I'll never play Jacksonville I'll never have that weird thrill I'll never play Jacksonville again, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll never play Jacksonville Never, never, never play Jacksonville No, I'll never, no, I'll never No, I'll never play Jacksonville No, I'll never, no, I'll never No, I'll never play Jacksonville again, again

At the end of this song - his 1,986th masterpiece .......what kind of inspired horror genius is this ....this is just the ending ........ Stand over there by the cypress tree Where the Trojan women and children were sold into slavery Long before the first Crusade Way back before England or America were made Step right into the burning hell Where some of the best-known enemies of mankind dwell
Mr. Freud with his dreams, Mr. Marx with his ax See the raw hide lash rip the skin from their backs Got the right spirit, you can feel it, you can hear it You've got what they call the immortal spirit You can feel it all night, you can feel it in the morn' It creeps in your body the day you were born
One strike of lightning is all that I need And a blast of electricity that runs at top speed Shimmy your ribs, I'll stick in the knife Gonna jumpstart my creation to life I wanna bring someone to life, turn back the years Do it with laughter and do it with tears......

I don't really know what my favorite lyrics are. One of them would be Time by Pink Floyd, right after the GOAT level solo (really, the entire song)
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

[this one means a lot to me so pardon the rant]
"Samson" - Regina Spektor
This gentle piano ballad used to make me tear up back in the day. The way it captures longing and a glimpse at love apart from the world around it via poignant allusion to the Bible story just got me every time... It's funny, because I think I still identified as faithful when I first heard it, but maybe my loving it was an indication that I was already on my way out, so to speak.
There's something about the song that always spoke to me of extrication, a glimpse at what could be (or could've been). It comes through in how Spektor sings the line: "The history books forgot about us and the Bible didn't mention us, not even once." There's a profound relief in her voice, a blissful intimation of freedom at long last. And there's fierce determination in the way she sings, "Oh, I cut his hair myself one night, a pair of dull scissors in the yellow light." Finally she can have her lover just to herself ("He kissed me till the morning light").
The Bible depicts Delilah as a scheming femme fatale (as the Old Testament is wont to do, hmm) so the subversiveness of reimagining the myth as a gentle love song from Delilah's POV can't be understated and strikes at the heart of the Bible's gender problems. This carries over into the last and most beautiful verse: "We couldn't bring the columns down, we couldn't destroy a single one." The Bible story presents this weakness as a cautionary tale of Samson giving up his strength to a harlot. Spektor finds in it again that sense of deep relief, as if in cutting Samson's hair she's metaphorically also severing his obligations to a jealous god and the two are now free to savor their love together apart.
It's the love song to end all love songs to my ears. A gorgeous, stirring, feminine reinterpretation of patriarchal archaic mythology. A gentle middle finger to stuffy man-made theism.
You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first

One of the most vicious songs ever about a girlfriend/wife and himself even that you can imagine. It's amazing it even exists really and even more amazing (or brave or clueless of them) that Hole covered it live.......and the title is itself a bi-polar pun "you know you're right" either being a sincere admission or a sarcastic kiss off.......or both.......and each part of the verses operates the same way.
Like a lot of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band record it's almost too personal to listen to, you feel you're intruding on it:
I will never bother you I will never promise to I will never follow you I will never bother you Never speak a word again I will crawl away for good I will move away from here You won't be afraid of fear
No thought was put into this And always knew it would come to this Things have never been so swell I have never failed to fail
I'm so warm and calm inside I no longer have to hide Let's talk about someone else Steaming soup against her mouth Nothing really bothers her She just wants to love himself I will move away from here You won't be afraid of fear No thought was put into this Always knew it'd come to this Things have never been so swell
I have never failed to fail
You know you're right, you know you're right

Elliott Smith was born today August 6th.....like Cobain (see previous song) he was a suicide who a lot of people felt was THE songwriter of his time. He had all the right influences - Beatles, Kinks, Young, Big Star - a stripped down aesthetic (almost amateurish actually) and for Miss Misery from Good Will Hunting he had an Oscar nomination too.
The best song he ever wrote and like a lot of his songs it's one people find comforting and gentle and which is something else entirely at the same time with one of the most beguiling opening verses of its era and a deceptive POV too - it's one of the great sad drinking songs ever .......and you can hear it a million times and never get that at all.......RIP.
"Drink up, baby, stay up all night With the things you could do, you won't - but you might The potential you'll be that you'll never see The promises you'll only make"

It's actually just one line "Some kind of solitude....... is measured out in you"....in the context of this song and this bands catalog you could easily miss that line........ but you shouldn't.

No band did what The Velvet Underground did here - maybe the most terrifying song ever if you read the words while playing it - about a sex change (I guess?) turned into a lobotomy (possibly?) was way avant garde in 1968.......it still sounds avant garde yet coherent in 2020 in concept, execution, frightening black humor, grotesqueness. The horror.....the horror.....
Lady Godiva’s Operation The Velvet Underground
Lady Godiva here dressed so demurely Pats the head of another curly haired boy, just another toy Sick with silence she weeps sincerely Saying word that have oh so clearly been said So long ago
Draperies wrapped gently 'round her shoulder Life has made her that much bolder now That she's found out how Dressed in silk, Latin lace and envy Pride and joy of the latest penny faire Pretty passing care
Hair today now dipped in the water Making love to every poor daughter's son Isn't it fun Now today propping grace with envy Lady Godiva peers to see if anyone's there And hasn't a care
Doctor is coming the nurse thinks sweetly Turning on the machines that neatly pump air The body lies bare Shaved and hairless what once was screaming Now lies silent and almost sleeping The brain must have gone away
Strapped securely to the white table Ether caused the body to wither and writhe Underneath the white light Doctor arrives with knife and baggage Sees the growth as just so much cabbage That now Must be cut away
Now come the moment of Great! Great! Decision! The doctor is making his first incision One goes here - one goes there The ether tube's leaking says someone who's sloppy The patient it seems is not so well sleeping The screams echo up the hall
Don't panic someone give him pentathol instantly Doctor removes his blade Cagily slow from the brain By my count of ten The head won't move

"My boyfirned's back and you're gonna be in trouble You see him comin' better cut out on the double
You're gonna be sorry you were ever born 'Cause he's kinda big and he's awful strong" (you can hear the smirk when she says that lol)
total guilty pleasure song. tongue-in-cheek ruthlessness that's ahead of its time. a mean girl anthem!

If you must write prose/poems The words you use should be your own Don't plagiarize or take "on loan" 'Cause there's always someone, somewhere With a big nose, who knows And who trips you up and laughs When you fall Who'll trip you up and laugh When you fall

One of AM's most underrated songs:
Fiendish wonder in the carnival's wake Though it caresses once again irritate Tread softly stranger Move over toward the danger THAT you seek
You think excitement has receded And the mirror distracts The logic of the trance Quickly reaches and grasps Handsome and faceless And weightless, your imagination roams
And now it's no ones fault but yours At the foot of the house of cards You thought you'd never get obsessed You thought the wolves would be impressed And you're a sinking stone But you know what it's like to hold the jeweler's hand That procession of pioneers all drowned
In the moonlight they're more thrilling Those things that he knows As he leads you through the grinning Bubble blowers in the snow Watching his exit Is like falling off the ferry in the night
The inevitables gather to push you around Any old voice makes a punishing sound He became laughter's assassin Shortly after he showed you what it was
And now it's no ones fault but yours At the foot of the house of cards You thought you'd never get obsessed You thought the wolves would be impressed And you're a sinking stone But you know what it's like to hold the jeweler's hand That procession of pioneers all drowned
If you've a lesson to teach me, I'm listening, ready to learn There's no one here to police me, I'm sinking in, until you return
If you've a lesson to teach me, Don't deviate, don't be afraid Without the last corner piece I can't calibrate, Let's get it ingrained

My dreams are prettier than me If I close my eyes, this is what I see You are never there, And you'll never see Nevermind the truth Nevermind you'll always be the same
Lying all the time, do you ever sleep Wake up feeling fine, you don't even care I can never be prettier for you I'm only ever prettier for me
Nevermind the truth you'll never see Nevermind you mean nothing to me Nevermind I have no place to go Nevermind you'll never ever know
My dreams are flying through my head When I go to sleep, will I wake up dead But I will forget, and I'll never be Prettier for you I'm only ever prettier for me
Nevermind the truth you always say, Nevermind the dreams that went away Nevermind I have no place to go Nevermind you'll never ever know
Nevermind the truth you'll never see Nevermind you mean nothing to me Nevermind I have no place to go Nevermind you'll never ever know
You'll never know, you'll never know You'll never know

This is ethereal, FM stereo to XM radio What does it mean, ethereal? Hmm.. either heavenly or spiritual Extreme, delicately light in a way that seems too perfect for this world Man that is righteous, faithful and keeps law Will surely live, declares the sovereign Lord And you are none of the above So you a sucka for death, if I'm a sucka for love

Jay Z The Takeover (2001) Longtime pacinoyes followers / students of the game - RayGittes, Merc, Beanie Sigel (um) - know I always reference this song going back to 1853 in the IMDB days - but I've never posted it because it's been off Youtube. ........ One of his best, stupendous lyrically - and the last verses are almost a way I try to live my life: Insanely wordy (um), funny (well.....), absolutely factual and completely rational.....ok I said " try" to live my life.......geesh A wise man told me, "Don't argue with fools," 'Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who So stop with that childish shit, I'm grown Please leave it alone, don't throw rocks at the throne Do not bark up that tree, that tree will fall on you I don't know why your advisors ain't forewarn you
Please, not Jay, he's not for play I don't slack a minute, all that thug rappin' and gimmick I will end it, all that yack will be finished You are not deep, you made your bed, now sleep Don't make me expose to the folks that don't know you I know you well, all the stolen jewels Twinkle-toes, you breakin' my heart
Can't fuck wit' me, go play somewhere, I'm busy And all you other cats throwin' shots at Jigga You only get half a bar, FUCK Y'ALL ______!

Can't stop listening to the new Black Country, New Road album, which might be one of my favorite albums in ... years? - this verse from the song "Good Will Hunting" - holy shit:
And if we’re on a burnin' starship The escape pods filled with your friends Your childhood film photos There's no room for me to go Oh, I'd wait there Float with the wreckage Fashion a long sword Traverse the Milky Way Tryna get home to you And you bring some piece of the stars

Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker is one of our great lyricists as far as I'm concerned - almost certainly too abstract for some, but I think everything she does is just pure poetry, as cheesy that sounds. I'm in love with the title track of their (great, maybe masterful) new double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You - a song I won't describe as "beautiful" for risk of giving pacinoyes a heart attack and because that's a trite to thing to say in general. But the song is really just otherworldly ... celestial ... I don't know how to describe it, just listen to it. And these lyrics - I mean, c'mon -
There's a dragon in thе phone line Coughing up a mighty flame With a tonguе of silver, silver Calling out my oldest name
She says, "Hey, you Do you remember me too?" We were coiling
It's a little bit magic Magic A little bit magic Magic

I called this song an "instant classic" off 1 listen earlier today and posted it in the best new music thread.......so I looked up the lyrics........it's more than I thought actually.........it's an all timer single.....and video.......and the line in bold is the couplet to beat this year too. It's even more of a knockout when you know the lyrics........
This is one of the greatest songs from Ireland and about Ireland too.......and it just came out TODAY.......
Damn.
I Love You Fontaines D.C.
I love you, I love you, I told you I do It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb I've eddied the heart now, from Dublin to Paris And if there was sunshine, it was never on me So close, the rain, so pronounced is the pain Yeah
Well, I love you, imagine a world without you It's only ever you, I only think of you And if it's a blessing, I want it for you If I must have a future, I want to with you Systеm in our hearts, you only had it before You only opеn the window, never open up the door And I love you, I love you, told you I do
Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand I had to be there from the start, I had to be the fucking man It was a clamber of the life, I sucked the ring off every hand Had 'em plying me with drink, even met with their demands When the cherries lined up, I kept the spoilings for myself 'Til I had thirty ways of dying looking at me from the shelf Cloud-parting smile I had, a real good child I was But this island's run by sharks with children's bones stuck in their jaws Now the morning's filled with cokeys tryna talk you through it all Is their mammy Fine Gael and is their daddy Fianna Fáil? And they say they love the land, but they don't feel it go to waste Hold a mirror to the youth and they will only see their face Makes flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die Say it to the man who profits, and the bastard walks by And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry Would I lie?
I love you, I love you, I told you I do It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb System in our hearts, you only had it before Echo, echo, echo, the lights, they go The lights, they go, the lights, they go Echo, echo
Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand I had to be there from the start, I had to be the fucking man It was a clamber of the life, I sucked the ring off every hand Had 'em plying me with drink, even met with their demands And I loved you like a penny loves the pocket of a priest And I'll love you 'til the grass around my gravestone is deceased And I'm heading for the cokeys, I will tell them 'bout it all About the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil And now the flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die Say it to the man who profits, and the bastard walks by And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry Would I lie?

I don't know that these are right but this is what I think they are - no lyrics are online .......one of the 5 great songs on their ripping Sprints - A Modern Job EP - my favorite EP in at least a couple years........a very funny, raging song....
It starts with the girl singer answering and in the 2nd verse it goes to the guitarist (a male).
"Everybodys asks "Are you in a band, are you in a band?" Yeah I'm in a band Everybody asks "Are you any good" Yeah I think we're good Everybody asks "Are you big?" No .........we're not that big.......
Everybody says "Are you in a band, are you in a band?" Yeah I'm in a band Everybody says "Are you any good?
Yeah, I think we're tough, they say yeah I like your cut Then they take your keys, then they take you wife, then they take your lease, and then they take your life"
.................and I wanna go................. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

The Replacements Stuck In The Middle
One of the many fun things about loving The 'Mats - like all kind hearted people with functioning ears and refined taste do - is mishearing their lyrics:
It's "Wait on the sons of no one" in Bastards of Young not "We are...." (allegedly) - and when I was a bastard of young(er) myself I always thought this line was "I got a head full of dreams - I got a pocket full of nothing" .......but it actually is "I got a head full of teeth......" and when I found that out in 1856 I laughed about it for days:
I love that because any pleb wannabe poet dumbass could write what I thought it was.........and "head full of teeth" is so much more "them" anyway isn't it?

Some of 2022's best for me or the ones I always sing to myself anyway ..... CMAT could have like 20 or more great lines all by herself tbh 1. Lyric of the year (song of the year too) : “And I loved you like a penny loves the pocket of a priest, and I'll love you 'til the grass around my gravestone is deceased" - Fontaines DC - "I Love You"
Other memorable lines that summed up the year:
* "Fuck New York and Fuck You" - Hank Wood & The Hammerheads - "You Could Have It"
* "The best laid plans can oft go to fuckery" - Peter Doherty & Frédéric Lo - "The Epidemiologist"
* "Every bottle is a boyfriend That didn't work out (Didn't work out) Every dance-off is a feeling I could do without (Could do without) Every barman is my best friend 'Til he's kicking me out Every bottle is my boyfriend...........And we're going out" - CMAT "Every Bottle Is My Boyfried"
* "Strange premise ........for a show .......but I like it" - Dry Cleaning "Liberty Log"
* "You say I'm mysterious, because I won't let you get it in" - Wet Leg "Piece of Shit"
* And the candy has been counted......And the bonfire will be haunted.....By orphans who are heard but never seen......Each and every Halloween" - Elvis Costello "Trick Out The Truth"
* "Let's go back to Tulsa to 1971 .......it's an accidental gunshot wound.......and a brand new buried son" - The Heat Inc. "Draw Blood For Proof"
* I'd say I love you but I catch my breath.........Cause whatever I love I always love to death" - Molly Nilsson - "Pompeii"
