DiCaprio bailed, huh? Interesting... I wonder if this means Killers of the Flower Moon is starting production sooner? Article says talks fell through. Or he doesn't want to risk another Boogie Nights situation where he regrets turning down PTA.
Or it could just mean what it says: talks fell through and they couldn't come to an agreement.

Cooper is such a step down imo. I REALLY wanted to see Dicaprio work with Del Toro . Oh well. I've mentioned multiple times about how overrated I think Cooper is. He comes across as such an annoying/try hard actor in so many things (mainly his work with David O Russell which for some reason got him a couple of Oscar noms. still baffles me to this day) Also, I finally got around to seeing A Star is Born and wasn't that impressed with his performance in that one either.

Two unpopular opinions for this thread: 1) I like BCoops and 2) I don't like del Toro.

I'm stoked to see it, no matter who plays the lead.

Very weird. I'm assuming DiCaprio read the script before negotiations began, and I'd assume the production wouldn't be stupid enough to not pay him given his B.O. track record as of late, so maybe he was conditionally on board given modifications to the script, etc. and GDT wasn't playing ball? Usually once Leo's involvement in talks makes the trades, it's a done deal. I can't really remember the last time he pulled out of talks like this. In any case, I won't be surprised if Cooper drops it too and Del Toro has to settle for Charlie Hunnam or something.

I'm not a Leo fan boy and never have been.
But compared to him, Cooper looks like an amateur actor...

Has anyone here seen the Tyrone Power version? I haven't but love that era in American cinema but wonder how well GDT will establish that particular tone of the noir tradition (if he even wants to go in that direction). He is a great stylist, and this particular story already screams for that magical del Toro touch. But honestly, I would probably prefer a more subdued approach to this, more low-budget Tourneur than fanciful DeMille so to speak. Very atmospheric noir and Power is magnetic as always. Nothing I thought screamed a retelling of, but a GDT touch to the story really intrigues me. I'm far less curious with Cooper though now.

This is quite a coup for Cooper, he’s seriously lacking in notable directors (though, to be fair, he repeats between DOR and Eastwood quite a bit). Good idea to strike while he’s hot and start going for bigger prestige projects. That he’s even the go to now if DiCaprio passes is a clear result of his ASiB success imo. He really needed a big hit.
I suspect DiCaprio ended up being more interested in something else that’s going to be announced soon.

He's a clown and it was ridiculous that Leo even considered being in one of this dude's movies. Del Toro's filmography is trash. Did Leo answer a phone call and the papers assumed he was down? Hilarious.

GDT, how about Blanchett in the Bradley Cooper role?

GDT, how about Blanchett in the Bradley Cooper role? I'd watch Blanchett in almost anything, so why not? You get Blanchett, you leave Cooper. Fair trade.

This cast is everything to me, even despite BCoop (for whom I'm really ambivalent despite loving his turn on A Star Is Born). Blanchett and Mara reunited? Rooney coming out of retirement? Collette, Jenkins, Shannon and Dafoe? Most are for smaller roles, but everything I've read on the plot/characters seems so sinister, macabre and the type of B-Movie thing Del Toro nails.
Really, all Del Toro needs to do now is to cast Frances McDormand and/or Emma Stone and I'll be this movie's bitch.
