I knew DGG directed Ep8 you know how? He put the pregnant girl way up and very improbably in a tree... That's a Manglehorn move! Last two eps saved a biding-time middle section of the szn and the finale has such a great ending sequence. Eric Roberts talk in spoilers... Once he was cleared of being the season's villain, it HAD to be Eric Andre, who else? Anyway, I hope he sticks around for next season, maybe with a little more to do? He could be a co-enforcer with Martin maybe? I'm surprised Kelvin's musclemen didn't somehow merge or face ER's wrestling goons. HBO, let's just do a spin-off on Eric Roberts hacking it around Memphis as a wrestling promoter and call it a day.
It's a nice, charismatic perf here....... and it adds to the dozen or so significant or underrated tv perfs he has. (I can list them for anyone interested - I know going to his IMDb is liable to crash your computer!!)

Honestly, if he'd have a bigger fan base here (it looks like it's only you and I?), I think the man would deserve a thread of his own. Most people are quick to dismiss him because his career is... erm... prolific. But over the years, he has done so much interesting work no one paid attention to. On his television stuff, I'd say "Paul's Case" is the best. Just a great, sensitive performance all around. "Purgatory" is cool, love his guest roles in "Oz" (Emmy-worthy), "Justified" (Timmy Olyphant shares a fun story about him here) and "Entourage" (he personally asked to be in it). Some others are lesser; "Descending Angel" is mostly OK but that third act doesn't work (Diane Lane is incredibly gorgeous to look at though, so can't criticize the film much). The one which most disappointed me was "Love, Cheat & Steal" 'cause one could've made magic with these trio of leads.

And with Babylon coming up, something big to wonder about. The most we've talked about his career is in the Best Actor Across Film/Stage/TV thread... search "Roberts" in there. His IMDb is gonna hit 700 credits soon and what's horrible and so great about the page itself is it's kinda impossible to take it all in. I had NO IDEA he was in Justified, for example. I recently went thru his 1990s (again) and there are all these really fun and overlooked gems that I didn't register before. Agree about his Oz spot! He's so great at "cameo" size perfs.... The Grave, Spun, Inherent Vice, etc. I'm surprised QT has never casted him in that way at least and he's auditioned for all of his movies. Anyway, a tv perf you gotta see, never before available but recently up on YouTube, Miss Lonelyhearts (1983, 55m). Soderbergh is a fan... and Michael Dinner directed it (he's an exec of Justified and yup, directed the ep with Roberts).

Sure, we need to have an "Eric Roberts appreciation thread" cause I think I also have a lot to share. I read it and almost agree with everything pointed out. I think the problem is some of his heyday movies are either forgotten (wonderful "Raggedy Man") or almost obscure these days ("Coca Cola Kid"). The biggest one people remember is "Star 80", which probably explains why he mostly gets villainous parts whenever he's in bigger films since 80s ("Final Analysis", "The Specialist", "National Security"). Slightly annoys me tbh 'cause the man is incredibly versatile. You mentioned his cameos, he cracks me up in that very brief appearance in "The Cable Guy". He can do comedy, romance, drama, action. Just needs the right project. And I think he kind of wants a comeback because he seems genuinely happy to be in "Babylon" and this show. Oh, I know what you mean. I remember back in 2017, i was looking at Oscar submissions of each country for the foreign-language film category, and what I'm seeing; Eric has a cameo in Turkish submission? The man shows up in the most unexpected places, which somewhat makes his career fascinating. I hope QT or somebody else will give him a chance again. I'm glad he's getting things like "Inherent Vice" and "The Dark Knight" from time to time, but I mean something bigger. Oh and I had seen "Miss Lonelyhearts" and I had to thank you for it, cause your post made me aware of that. And I enjoyed it great deal; ending was haunting. So I'm bit late but thank you! Speaking of that post of yours, haven't seen "Lonely Hearts" but really like "Love is a Gun". It's so bizarre but watchable in its own way. I have a soft-spot for his 90s run. Surely B-movies but many of them are fun.

"Hello. Hi. Will you please come with me? I just killed someone." Danny McBride deserves all the Emmys for that line delivery alone.
This was a fantastic season that stuck the landing beautifully (the last sequence with "Broken Hearts Never Mend" is right up there with some of the best uses of music in recent TV), and yes, Eric Roberts deserves every bit of praise he's gotten for this. Career-best work from the man. I hope that he shows up in Season 3.

Can't believe what a dumbass mess that added up to nothing season 2 was. Went from a perfect cringe/humor balance to mostly cringe.
The only worthwhile plot this had going for it was Eli's past catching up with him, and even that wasn't explored nearly as well as it could've been. Eric André was awful, and his character just went from lame to predictable. Kelvin and the musclemen were unwatchable. Judy is probably the funniest character on the show... and her main plotline this season was her husband getting baptized? Which was done by episode 4? 37 minute episodes and they really couldn't figure out something interesting for the funniest character to do? Wild.
It wasn't all bad, though. Of course it still has its share of funny moments. Goodman is amazing (outside of around 20% of the time where he strangely puts zero effort in) and Eric Roberts was even better (with no blips in his effort). Robbing the audience of a full season of the Eli/Junior bromance after setting it up so wonderfully in the first episode was hard to stomach. And of course Goggins is fantastic once again, and Macaulay Culkin's scene was certainly one of the highlights of the season.
Hopefully it bounces back with Zion's Landing and actually gives its characters some interesting things to do.

Another fantastic season. While I’m more than happy that it was renewed for another season, part of me felt like this would have been the perfect series finale to go out on. Also, BJ the mvp for this season.

I'm surprised QT has never casted him in that way at least and he's auditioned for all of his movies. This is on Eric Roberts and I forgot to say a few months ago in one of his many podcast appearances, he was asked about never working with QT and said: "Let's just say.....I have a feeling I'm gonna be in the next one." Idk if it was just wishful thinking or if he's actually in talks for The Movie Critic but...prayer circle please !

Also, BJ the mvp for this season. Glad someone else kept up with it! Can't wait for S4. And I can't get enough of Danny McBride.... altho the downside to his working in tv is he doesn't have time to do many movies (and I've seen them alllll... shoutout to his 30 Mins or Less perf, so funny). But I love that he writes every script of the show... while writing horror features too (wavering quality aside). I slightly prefer S2 bc of Eric Roberts - enough said - but S3 worked for me even tho a lot of the Goodman scenes are a drag. I love Goodman but I never really liked his perf in this series, he seems far too fatigued.... having said that, his face in the monster truck at the end was priceless. (Another great ending montage just like S2....those guys are like comedic masters of montage sequences) . My MVP....... well, Edi Patterson kills me and I can't think of another performance like it. Also, Baby Billy made me laugh more this szn than ever. Also dug old age Shea Whigham's cameo.
