John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, and Alex Hassel are all part of the cast. They’re cast as Spike, Jet, Faye, and Vicious respectively. “Bonzai, Bochchoi, Mad Mushroom” Edward hasn’t been cast yet. The anime is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, so of course I’m excited, and skeptical.

I like John Cho as an actor, but he seems miscast as Spike. Too old.

I'm surprised ScarJo isn't in the lead.

I'm surprised ScarJo isn't in the lead. They’re saving her for a guest spot as Gren.

Arugably my favorite piece of fiction in any medium. This looks like garbage, though. It looked like garbage when it was announced, it looks like ever hotter garbage now.

I'm surprised ScarJo isn't in the lead. She's over japanese people, I hear she'll be playing a vietnamese drag queen next year.

I was gonna cheer that the hex I cast on this show was working, but then I read "7-9 months." What happened to cause that serious of an injury? Edit: No casting for Ed yet? Are they just going to cut the character? I wouldn't mind, due to the difficulty of getting her right.

And Ed will be in the show, but they’re not saying who’s playing her.

I'm just wondering what could have gone wrong to need that much surgery and rehab. I'm not familiar with showbiz, but any injury that requires 7-9 months before the show is in production again seems very bad.

Looks like awful cosplaying... I suppose if they lean into the ridiculous look, it could work. I'm not holding out hope, this looks like blatant fanbait, and pretty bad fanbait at that.

I've never seen the anime before but I like John Cho a lot as an actor and it looks like Netflix gave this show a pretty sizable budget so I'll give it a watch I guess). Here's hoping its entertaining

That looks like silly fun, actually. The anime is the love of my teenage life and I still consider it to be possibly the greatest thing I've ever seen. This looks like pure ridiculously stupid style, but entertaining. It won't have any of the depth of the original show, but hell, I don't think that I've seen *anything* with the depth of the original show. The fanservice recreating moments from the show do not work at all, though. The duel in the church was amazing because it was new. Teddy Bomber was funny because nobody actually gave a crap about him. Mad Pierrot was scary because the show built up Spike's philosophy of life carefully before Pierrot senselessly began trying to kill him. Every time they redo these bits in the trailer/opening credits, this looks like it's standing on the shoulders of the original instead of being its own thing. And on a side note, there is more exposition of Spike's past in this trailer than we got in the whole damn anime. I'm not asking for the level of subtlety that the original gave us - it's a masterpiece for a reason, and walks a careful tightrope in its delivery of information - but it was rather on-the-nose.

Good/informative post dude. I noticed that Netflix also has the 1st season of the original anime show of Cowboy Bebop. I immediately put it on my watch list and will binge watch it this weekend (the animation looks incredible and slick)

My reasoning is that it's a show that is style over substance, but there is a lot of substance if you sit back and look at it. Repeating motifs (there are three episodes towards the beginning, middle and end that are all variations on the same theme, down to specific events happening), character development happening in the background, that sort of thing. You come in for very fun individual episodes, but it uses that razzle dazzle to build a strong backbone without ever drawing attention to it. That said, going through the first five episodes or so is probably fine, as it gives you a good idea of what to expect in the show's style.

Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime series. My hopes were always low for this series, but from what I've heard this is rough. Admittedly, Ed is a hard thing to adapt to live action, but then there's this:
So I think I made the right decision staying away from this.

so the critic reviews for this were absolutely terrible but surprisingly the IMDb score isn't as bad, currently sitting at 6.8 with individual eps rated in about that range. I'm curious how I'll feel when I eventually get into it because I'm not bringing any baggage as a fan of the anime. Honestly I think it looks fun, but then I also thought The Witcher looked fun and that was total dogshit

This show looks like total camp, so I suppose that maybe it could be enjoyed as such (although the clips I've seen are TERRIBLE), but it also looks like a complete misunderstanding of what the original show is like or about. If you'd like to try it, the English dubbed first episode is on Youtube, and I'd suggest at least trying one session for comparison. I don't have Netflix so I can't try an episode of the live action show for my full thoughts on it.
