I have a sneaking suspicion that there will be no middle ground for this... it'll either be great or it's gonna suck. But at least it'll probably be gorgeous to look at. I heard the test screenings have gone over very well.

I think this will be the "non-Netflix" contender even more than OUATIH is for BP.
It has the scope and large canvas (which again is the theme of the year), a technical wizardry, a manageable run time, serious subject matter.......I personally don't think it can really compete with The Irishman (sight unseen of course) tbh, but a lot of people will.......

I definitely get the sense that Mendes is the real spoiler to Scorsese, not Tarantino. I definitely think it's the frontrunner for Cinematography and both Sound awards, and it's that sort of technical herculean effort that appeals to DGA.

Is it weird that I’m less interested in this having now seen “They Shall Not Grow Old”?

I honestly think QT's film will be a very strong contender for both BP and BP.
I can't quite understand it, tbh. There are a lot of QT movies way better than OUATIH but I have the feeling this will overshadow 1917 or Marriage Story or Joker or the Irishman in many basic categories.
As for 1917, I also believe it will be a hit or miss but if it's a hit for me (I'm not a fan of war movies, like, at all) that would mean it will be highly acclaimed overall.
EDIT: Is there an official runtime?

Win or loose, The Deaks™ just keeps on keeping on, just like Joel and Ethan.
The academy already awarded him and could totally decide that, I don’t know, Joker “should” “win” in that category because it’s what the kids are into these days.

If I should guess right now I'd say that Sam Mendes is the favourite to win the "Jim Malone Award" for Best Director this year. Really looking forward to this.

It looks beautiful, and looks to be the frontrunner for cinematography, but I still have hesitations about it for director and especially for picture.

Beautiful looking and memorable looking too in its plotting ........everybody is playing for 2nd place imo in BP/BD but you can anticipate people talking about this in some pretty rapturous adjectives.

Looks solid, can be a real dark horse. The Studio didn't tag "American Beauty" in the trailer, it is so much better than Skyfall, Retarded. It's fairly standard for studios to market new movies by mentioning the director's previous film/films which are more in line with the one in question. It'd be weird for Universal to market their intense war movie via "American Beauty", wouldn't it?

After constantly getting invited to the party but never fully recognized, the Deaks could win his 2nd in 3 years.

The trailer isn't an FYC for the Oscars, Ray. It's meant to sell the movie to the average moviegoing audience: most of whom probably haven't seen American Beauty, many of whom have probably seen Skyfall.

I had my doubts about this because it's been a long time since Mendes has been close to being nominated, but so far from those that have got to see it early, very enthusiastic reactions. I guess we'll get a better feeling today and the next few days as there's more screenings in the next week for it.

I'm skeptical as well, but if those reactions are anything to go by, then it looks to be Mendes biggest potential Oscar player since Revolutionary Road. I'm actually thinking it could win a lot of technical awards, it is a war movie after all. It really does feel like one of those "under the radar, this could go anywhere" type films, we get every December.
