It’s gonna have to get RAVE reviews for me to be interested in this. I’m kind of done with WWI & WWII movies. The subject has been done to death we get it...

This is high on my watchlist already quite a long time. With Firth and Cumberbatch the anticipation even grows. If Mendes is able to transform his gritty atmosphere of "Road to Perdition" into a WWI movie that could become really exciting.

Powerful cast and a great auter but the WW subject has been done way too many times already.
Interested but not hyped.

So I guess this is the one that will be leading the monthly polls now.

"Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch to star in WWI epic directed by Sam Mendes" is such a "well, yeah, of course, how didn't that happen earlier" piece of movie news. Makes me wanna go ahead and create a Project Generator thread to come up with more items like that, like "Meryl Streep to star as Theresa May in docudrama written by Anthony McCarten".

Sounds awfully similar to the Family Guy writing staff.

Wait...they're only gonna start filming next week and they expect to have it out by the end of the year? Yeah. Okay. Good luck with that.

Mendes is extraordinarily hit-and-miss with me, but this is a historical era I've been salivating to see done properly in modern cinema (especially as Spielberg so catastrophically fucked up his take on World War I), and Deakins shooting trench warfare sequences is exciting me greatly. Still, it will all come down to the story.

I agree that I'm a bit tired of war movies as well. But due to the horror of World War II and the Holocaust the first World War has always been a bit overshadowed, while it was an event horrifying enough in itsself and has many stories to tell. But as I understood this will rather be about the battle itsself. Probably at the Western Front.
Mendes is one of my very favorite directors, so I'll definitely watch it.

What's with all the WWI/II movie hate? There's a lot of them, sure... but that's because they were two huge events that were (well until last year) in the past 100 years that, you know, affected THE WORLD.
Anyway, I'm always down for a good war film just as I'm always down for a good RomCom.

And while I say I'm a bit tired, I mean with it, that some are just mass fabrication and look similar to each other. Obviously a great war film would add very well to the whole topic. Dunkirk is still the best film over the last five years for me.

We don't get too many WW1 movies. Sam Mendes, Roger Deakins and that cast? I'm in.

Um... Also: don't think I'd ever say this, but Deakins now seems like a weird choice for DP. He practically always keeps a stationary camera...

Haha yeah, this is tailor made for someone like Chivo (if the one long shot thing is true) That said, will be very interesting to see Deaks do something that’s pretty foreign to him.

Intriguing and exciting. I really liked "Victoria", a german movie with which director Sebastian Schipper did the same, but it also showed the limitations of this approach.

I’m there for Deakins but I can’t help but think of this movie as Mendes’ attempt at his own Dunkirk and can’t really imagine the results being as inspiring or excitingly bare as Nolan’s work was.

Is it possible that Deakins gets double noms this? Possible but I think it's likely The Goldfinch will be snubbed for this.

It would be sort of weird to me if Sam Mendes won for this and became a two time Best Director winner. I don't really see much else though that feels like a big technical achievement that they like to award now in this category. Maybe The Irishman, but I got burned before with predicting Silence.
The Aeronauts seemed pretty big in scope, but I've lost confidence in Amazon since they shuffled The Report back to awards season with a November 15 release date instead of releasing it at the end of September, and moved The Aeronauts from an IMAX opening on October 25, to opening it on December 6 and then putting it on its streaming service two weeks later. Plus, they're not taking it to Venice like I had heard, so I think maybe they still don't know what they want to push, or they've given up this year.
I guess Ford v Ferrari, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, or Parasite might fit too, but I don't think those stand any chance of winning Best Director, and at least Ford v Ferrari probably won't even be competitive for the nomination.

That's interesting.I didn't know they'd moved The Report back to November .It got raves at Sundance particularly for Bening for Driver so it never made sense to me to release it in September.Early buzz on Aeronauts is very positive,it's possible it just wasn't ready in time for Venice so I'm still hopeful about that one.
