A brighter summer day, a crime? Shit thought it's romance, needs to check this thing. It is definitely not a romance It's a tough one to perfectly classify but I'd go with epic crime drama.

So many good stuff I didn’t put on my ballot. Wolf of Wall Street Departed should be higher. Would’ve been great to see Scarface a lot higher. If I put A Clockwork Orange as crime and had it in my ballot it would’ve been in my Top 3.

I wish Memories of Murder was higher but there’s a lot of great stuff so far, including films I probably should’ve put on my ballot haha.

A lot of this seems to be determined by what genre people consider a film rather than the quality of a film. I'm sure Vertigo is going to end up being one of the best movies on the list according to most people, but it didn't get more votes because a lot of people probably don't think of it as a "crime" film.

That's the nature of any genre list. On ICM Mulholland Dr. always makes the top 20-25 of the best films consensus list, but usually only barely cracks the Top 100 for the horror list, just because not everyone would call it that. Genre is goofy. But yeah, I wouldn't call Vertigo crime, if I did it'd have been in my Top 3-5. Viced Great presentation and definitely a very cool list so far. @raygittes07 Nice, enjoy.

I just voted for my favorite movies Letterboxd has marked as crime. The plot of the movie centers on crime so IDK why it wouldn't be considered one. A "crime movie" is a very vague concept, much more so than horror.

A "crime movie" is a very vague concept, much more so than horror. Yeah, that's fair enough. I just personally don't see Vertigo as being about crime in a major way, if that makes sense. I think it has way more going on involving other things that come first. Whereas something like A Brighter Summer Day also has a ton going on, but a lot of the content feels very directly crime related, many of the characters are gangsters, etc. In Vertigo the crime aspect of it feels like such a backdrop to what's really going on.

Well a lot of great films so far (and hopefully will watch Le Cercle Rouge very soon as I'm starting to get back into 1970), but definitely very baffled by how low some have placed ( Vertigo in particular, but also The French Connection, Touch of Evil, and really all three of the other Hitchcock films mentioned so far: Rope, North by Northwest, Strangers on a Train). I'm sure it's like countjohn mentioned and it's a lot of category confusion, but honestly if a crime is the driving force of the film - be it theft, murder, espionage, or even dog-napping - I feel it qualifies as a crime film. But hey, good for those like me who considered everything so far to fall in that category because I definitely agree with all so far. Very glad that due to the confusion some gems like Place Beyond the Pines, Rififi, and Memories of Murder managed to sneak in. Hopefully some more surprises to come!

I have the feeling that no Johnnie To film will be on the list, which would be a big shame, since he is by far the best crime director of the 21st century. The list is very good so far. Only the inclusion of Inherent Vice seems baffling to me. Never got into that film at all.

Lots of great films but - Serie Noire might be the one that's not just a great crime film but the one on this list that's also the funniest, most romantic love story, and saddest character study too all at the same time - it's a one of a kind wonder......
