Can anyone give some comparisons of the tone of show to the likes of other movies/shows? In terms of the quality of writing probably The Wire.

Wow. That finale was one of the most gut punching things I’ve ever felt from a movie or show. There’s nothing I can say that has already been said in this thread. Each season got better and better for me, with the last season keeping me on the edge of my seat with every episode. The acting was aces and the writing was all time. I think this is my second favorite show of all time after The Leftovers, but I can see an argument for this being better.
I can’t get that train scene out of my head. Arguably the greatest scene in television history. So fucking heartbreaking. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect ending. I’m so happy that this board raved both this show and The Leftovers, because I wouldn’t have watched them otherwise.

About a day has now passed sine I finished this and it grows for each passing hour. It's greatest feat is probably how well it works as a whole. Many (even great) shows which can be consistently great don't work as well as a whole as this at all.
So many great things about this show, so I'm just gonna mention a few of them. The writing - it's really a testament to the writing when the show works so well as a whole - in terms of building and developing a story over time as well as developing the characters this show is almost second to none (probably only The Wire have it beat there from what I've seen, but that pretty much is the GOAT show). The acting is in general very, very good with Rhys as a standout who is absolutetly marvelous throughout the show. And that finale, brilliant. I see many mentions the train scene, but for me it was the Stan confrontation scene and the phone call to Henry both of which just crushed me.
Probably just missing the top 5 of my favorite ever shows, but it is up there.
