British VogueLegendary Television is prepping Simply Halston, a limited series starring and executive produced by Ewan McGregor about the meteoric rise and fall of the first American celebrity fashion designer. Written by Sharr White (The Affair) and to be directed by Dan Minahan (American Crime Story), Simply Halston tracks Halston (born Roy Halston Frowick) as he leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire that’s synonymous with luxury, sex, status and fame, literally defining the era he lives in, 1970’s and ‘80’s New York — until a hostile takeover forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset… the name Halston itself. McGregor, White and Minahan executive produce. Killer Films is producing.

With the two Yves Saint Laurent biopics we got a couple of years ago, I'm surprised it has taken this long to get a Halston project going - these two were the undisputed kings of fashion and glamour in the 70s. What do you all think of Ewan McGregor playing him, though? I think I would appreciate an actor inherently more glamorous (like, say, Jude Law or Matt Bomer), but I generally like McGregor and this seems to be something he's passionate about. Allenism pacinoyes HELENA MARIA Mattsby - Hoping to get a discussion going. Will you guys watch?

Well for me, I'd always say that Ewan McGregor is the key example of why versatility is an overrated attribute in acting - though it does matter but not in the way we say - it's just when people say any actor is "versatile" I shrug a bit. What do they mean? Versatility across material, across emotions, across occupations (he's a boxer, a priest, a cab driver as they used to say about De Niro, reducing this great actor to his f'n fictional employment resume) McGregor can play all over the map but to me never does any of it particularly memorably but even that is ok - I like a lot of the films he's in a whole lot - heck I'd argue Ghost Writer as an underrated classic (but I'm a little weird ) but what does he bring to your project? Well my guess is he'll be fine/good and I can't think of anyone necessarily "perfect" for it........but yeah you have a point. There's a certain built in safety to him......

I'm not familiar with Halston but the fashion world is a great realm to explore especially that era I'd imagine -- but this role idk I'm immediately thinking someone like Fassbender is better suited and on top of that his career really needs it, where the hell is he?! Ewan recently played a gay character in I Love You Phillip Morris and I didn't think he was particularly good there....

Halston was THE American designer before there really "were" American designers... Fashion was primarily French and Italian before him. Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford - you can draw a direct line from them to Halston. A staple at Studio 54, beloved by the likes of Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, and Elizabeth Taylor, he defined American luxury, though his designs were famously minimalist. The models he frequently used were dubbed the "Halstonettes." Halston at work... with Anjelica Huston! (One of his muses and Halstonettes!) I think this could have been an interesting role for Armie Hammer, too... Hm.

This is surprising news,I thought it was dead in the water.I'm not absolutely convinced McGregor is the right choice for Halston,Finn Wittrock or Jack Huston would've been my pick, but I'm still looking forward to this.

Yeah, I think this is probably the first major miscast of the decade. Armie Hammer would have been my choice. The supporting cast looks fun, though!

@tyler Alors qu'est-ce que tu en penses , mon ami ? Oh honey, the music is all wrong! Where's the Boogie & Disco? It's suppose to be the 70s (Studio 54, Quaaludes, Cocaine, Andy Warhol, Diana Ross, Cocaine, Marisa Berenson, Quaaludes... and more Cocaine)... yet this feels as though they've gone for a slick, 80s synth soundtrack... and it's all wrong! Should have been something this Chic's Le Freak! Maybe I need to take a quaalude and calm down.

"Enjoy the Silence" came out in 1989, so putting in the trailer feels anachronistic.
McGregor is hit-or-miss with me, but he looks promising here.

Oh honeys, am I the only one watching this? For me, McGregor is doing it quite well... The family have disowned this saying that Halston was a nice man, but I'm still waiting for him to become really monstrous and will be disappointed if he doesn't... otherwise this storyline is gonna be just meh as Halston/McGregor leave me cold... I mean the Seventies fashion & art world needs to be about cocaine driven, money grabbing, disco dancing, grotesque excess. Bring out Warhol!

Oh poodle, my favorite part of the series was the French actress Rebecca Dayan as Elsa Peretti! She was just perfect.

I didn't realise she was the model in this iconic photograph by Helmut Newton. ...But I think the best thing about her is her gorgeous Italian accent and her very frank and amusing way of speaking. By the way, I watched Halston twice and think it's Ryan Murphy's best work to date. Ewan McGregor was just incredible! It's almost like a Greek tragedy.
