Reviews for Ken Loach's Sorry We Missed You, coming in hot for what might be his third Palme: If that commie motherfucker wins again...... The Wind that Sakes the Barley winning the Palm d'Or is still one of the most WTF moments in Cannes whole history.

I won't post reviews here but, Portrait of a Lady On Fire - starring the worlds best working actress Adèle Haenel, who I've obviously championed for a long time going back to the old IMDB days seems to have had a pretty knockout screening today.
One day Haenel's insane streak is going to end and we'll need to stand back in awe of it. I mention her in the same breath as Huppert and Streep...........and she's 30. Once in generation talent - if you're lucky.

Here's some for Portrait of a Lady On Fire - pacinoyes, playing the stephen role (poorly) this one time Variety strongly positive called it "subversively seductive" and "adoringly crafted" IndieWire gave it an A grade, uses the "masterpiece" word. Xavier Dolan called it "magnificent" (Um......) THR is a rave : ....... "intricately layered, coded and gilded with symbolism as an Old Master and made by a filmmaker who is herself, as we say in English nowadays, on fire" Guardian: 5/5, draws parallels to Hitchcock and praise all around for Haenel, Merlant and Sciamma......

Yeah, I'll post the reviews for Portrait and Frankie when I get home from work tonight, but I am getting major Palme vibes from the Sciamma. If it doesn't win, Haenel seems like a frontrunner for the Best Actress prize.

Once in generation talent - if you're lucky. Mr. PacinoEyes, top 5 performances by Ms. Haenel? I haven't really seen her in much and am very interested in discovering her work! Well, it's really hard to explain but she isn't like other actresses where she has a "Persona" or "Possession" - her unusual gift is just fitting into everything......and I mean everything - period pieces, contemporary pieces, drama, as part of an ensemble or a lead - in outrageously zany comedy (she has almost a Judy Holliday type gift for them, improbably). You'll eventually find that even if she's in something that is not great, she herself always is a standout (like In the Name of My Daughter with Catherine Deneuve etc.) If you just see her biggest stuff you may think she's overrated, but the more you see the more alluring, accomplished and mysterious she becomes, it's really that she's never "off" or close to off in anything, and the material she's in and terrific in, is all over the map. Here's 5 I like and please post your thoughts too. I could recommend some others but this is a good primer I think The first 2 below were Caesar award winners for her btw: Suzanne Love at First Fight The Trouble with You (this is a comedy and she's just inspired in this) BPM The Unknown Girl

Between the reviews for The Lighthouse and Abel Ferrara's Tommaso, I'm starting to get a Dafoenaissance vibe this year...
