I was hoping The Lighthouse would have the clout to be a contender for Official Selection, but I'll take what I can get.

It should be noted that Herzog doesn't speak Japanese, and thus he wasn't sure what was being said/improvised on the scene. A very intriguing and daring way to make a movie, for sure.

And Robin Campillo is in the jury as well.
They’re all so different, I can’t imagine Lanthimos agreeing with Pawlikowski, or anyone really, and great to see Reichardt in there.

Reichardt, Lanthimos, Pawlikowski, Rohrwacher Elle is certainly an interesting choice -- but she is older than me and has experience with a number of the world's best filmmakers -- so I can't really judge! Looks stellar to me.

what she knows about judging films She grew up in the industry, she's worked with more auteurs than any actress of her age group (several of whom are Cannes favorites), and she seems to have a good head on her shoulders. She's not that much younger than a lot of posters here, so I don't see why people should be denigrating her as a choice.

Well, There are many better actresses, oscar nominated haven't tasted that job like Ronan, Knightley, Jlaw, Stone etc. Stepping over them is not a good thing. You're assuming that they haven't reached out to those actresses in the first place, and that they weren't turned down because of scheduling commitments or because they don't feel the desire to do it.

Now that we know our jury, I'll do some extremely premature predictions. This is assuming that Tarantino, Kechiche and Gerwig don't become last-minute additions.
Palme d'Or: Portrait of a Girl on Fire Grand Prix: Pain and Glory Jury Prize: The Dead Don't Die Best Director: Mati Diop, Atlantique Best Actor: August Diehl, A Hidden Life Best Actress: Sonia Braga, Bacarau Best Screenplay: Little Joe

^^ Those picks look likely
Almodovar is in a good position. The loudest voices will be the filmmakers, and, being the accolade hungry animals that they are, they'll surely empathise with Pedro's overdue status. Lanthimos, the outlier, will probably rate hybrid drama/sci-fi art fare like Little Joe or Parasite (if that's indeed what they are). I think this will be the year Dolan gets shut out. It would have been the ideal year for Lav Diaz to debut, but he must have committed some kind of personal crime against Thierry. And Alain Gomis. For the love of gum, can we please put Gomis' name in our little black book. Force him to veto Berlin. Grant him automatic entry upon the completion of his next feature.

So many people are penciling in Pedro for the Palme, but I feel like we'll see something more esoteric take the big prize while still not slighting Almodovar.
I really hope Dolan gets shut out, but after the dumpster fire that was 2016, such a hope is thin.

Could be. Is Malick definitely not attending? I like August Diehl representing A Hidden Life, presenting the opportunity for a curveball during the ceremony. I see a lot of people anticipating the Malick for the win, but Diehl getting called up for actor instead.

I haven't heard any scuttlebutt on Malick, but he didn't attend when he won the Palme last time (and I don't believe he did when he won Director in 1978), so I doubt it'd matter either way.

Kechiche returns to Cannes too, his movie will be 4 hours. For a moment there I thought this was a new project, but apparently it's a follow-up to 2017's Mektoub My Love, which he took to Venice. The first one was 3 hours and largely criticized for being overlong; this is a whole hour longer and isn't even called part two, but an Intermezzo? Well then.

I’m glad it’s premiering here after all, but I wish it wasn’t in competition. It doesn’t need the boost of awards recognition that other films do.

Kechiche is going to be the big controversy of the festival, I expect, with him still under something of an active investigation.
I really wish Tarantino weren't going to Cannes, as he's just going to suck up all the air there.

I think it's a good thing. Cannes competition becoming a home only for obscure and marginal filmmakers isn't really sustainable.

Pacino hasn't been In Comp since '71 & '73 with Panic in Needle Park and Scarecrow! Hope he shows up there with the cast......

Kechiche returns to Cannes too, his movie will be 4 hours. I'm really looking forward to his new film, even though Mektoub, My Love is probably among the most uneven films I have ever seen. It had some extremely beautiful sequences in it, but also others that were quite tedious and pointless. It also felt like an hour too long, so it definitely could have used some trimming. A four hour film to follow that up seems like overkill, but I'm interested nonetheless.
