So word on the street is that we'll get our jury president announcement tomorrow, so I figured we'd go ahead and put together a master thread for the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from May 13 to May 25, 2019. So anything from speculation on potential contenders to official news can go here.

I hope Radegund could be competed at this year's Cannes I believe I read that it's going to Venice. Which, if it wins the Golden Lion, earns Malick the trifecta.

I have a feeling that both Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone will serve as members of the Jury.

Sorry if I'm off-base here but that is where OUATIH will premiere right?
I mean it just seems so perfect - Hollywood at Cannes - even down to the panel which I assume will be a major media event QT, Leo, Pitt, Robbie (and possibly Pacino even though he's harder to guess, like I said elsewhere I think that his role may be be bigger or at least more pivotal than has been let on but just guessing).

Tarantino obviously has a history with Cannes, so it's quite likely. And like Inglourious Basterds (his last film to appear there), it's a mid-summer release, and far too early for Venice or TIFF.

Will probably boil down to whether or not it's finished in time. Cannes is only 2 months before the release date, but if I recall correctly Tarantino was still editing Django in late November/early December, so we'll see.

Yeah, I’m also totally expecting OUATIH to premiere here as well...in addition to what’s already mentioned, this marks the 25th anniversary of Pulp Fiction’s Palme win, and QT has already compared the new one to that...feels too perfect.

James Gray is apparently hoping for the visual effects on Ad Astra to be done by late April/early May, which would cut it very fine indeed for a Cannes bow . . . but he says he's hopeful he can get it in under the wire. And even if it wasn't 100% done, it wouldn't be the first time that an unfinished film screened at Cannes and did well (Apocalypse Now won the Palme).
I'm also gonna throw out a NGNG prediction: Ciro Guerra's Waiting for the Barbarians makes it into the comp. Guerra seemingly has a quick turnaround time in post, and shooting wrapped in December.

Waiting For The Barbarians is another of those "no brainer/slam dunk" films if it does get done in time - a great and major book, a political main text and transferable subtext (which would play great at Cannes), an attractive multi-generational main cast, major director. I want to give it awards already.....

It certainly has the pedigree, and I can see someone like Alejandro really gravitating towards a movie like this . . . but I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch. How many legendarily great novels have been successfully adapted in recent memory? Even No Country for Old Men, brilliant as it is, is seen as "lesser McCarthy" by some.

I kinda think with everything that has happened between Netflix and Cannes, they might figure to just go to Venice instead, as it was much friendlier (and it's a much stronger launching point for Oscar contenders).

This dude seems to have heard a confirmation. Pacino's Cannes history for those interested! : in competition - Panic in Needle Park and Scarecrow which won the Palme d'Or. Out of comp with Ocean's 13, and Camera d'Or (sub-category for first films) with Looking for Richard.

Robbie Collin (a.k.a. Pacinoyes's nemesis) tweeted out his predicted roster, assuming Netflix/Cannes don't resolve their feud: Hope he's right about Refn, Zeitlin, the Safdies and Eggers.

The Safdies at Cannes becomes another of these films (Roma, maybe The Irishman) that knocked/kicked the door in for Netflix and the industry - I mean I don't know what sort of deal they've worked out for it but obviously if it goes and that seems to be whats happening it's a seismic shift in that relationship.

I doubt The Irishman is gonna be finished. When do they announce the line-up?

I doubt The Irishman is gonna be finished. When do they announce the line-up? Yeah, I think the Scorsese would be a pipe dream even if Netflix and Cannes settled. We're two months away from the first days of the festival, so I suspect that we'll hear the first word of entrants in the next couple of weeks, which will trickle in over the next couple of weeks after that, along with news of who will be the rest of the jury. And that is the real essential thing to think about when doing predictions: who is on the jury, and how vocal they might be.

I'm hoping Pain and Glory is good enough to get Antonio an Oscar nod this year.
