This is true. I was looking at comments on the Rotten Tomatoes Facebook page and seeing things to the effect of “I’m happy this heartwarming film won over that boring Spanish movie I stopped watching after 15 minutes.” Still, at the risk of sounding pretentious, I would prefer having The Oscars be for people who are seriously passionate about movies, not casual filmgoers who see 12 movies per year. I wouldn’t want something I have only a casual interest in be more interested in pandering to me than someone much more passionate about it.
Well the Oscars are voted on by 8,000 ppl in the movie industry so I’m not sure what you’re looking for? Yes, the general public really liked Green Book and BR, but so did most people in Hollywood. It’s really only a small vocal group online that hate those films. I highly doubt the academy voters are trying to pander to anyone, as much as they are just voting for what they really loved.

Yeah, you’re right. The winner and the nominees this year just felt far more mainstream than the last few years. Oh well

It definitely was but this is also the same group that voted for Shape of Water, Moonlight, and Birdman over the last few years. I just think people read way too much into the winners being calculated somehow vs just a wide range of movies that are sometimes safe ending up the favorite for the majority.
Someone turn Alfonso and Guillermo walking off stage with their arms wrapped around each other into a gif.
It doesn’t do the original clip enough justice, but it’s the most wholesome moment ever. That and Spike and Sam during BlacKkKlansman’s screenplay win.

With preferential balloting, it's pretty much impossible for AMPAS to act as a monolith and vote with an agenda. We can't even be sure some years whether their BP win was the favorite for the plurality, only that it was the most generally liked.
The Internet made memes about the 25,660 cuts in the Liam Neeson jumping a fence scene in Taken 3 and yet, four years later, the award-giving bodies are throwing awards at Bohemian Rhapsody for doing the exact same thing.
The editing branch voted for it too so maybe somebody in that guild needs to explain it. Maybe the movie was a hot mess and the editors did a good job at piecing it together.
Honestly, I think whoever directed this scene is more to blame than John Ottman here. It's clear that as an editor he had to work with absolute shit here - it's a scene directed without any concern for its rhythm or movement, or for any cinematic artistry. Singer (or Fletcher, who knows) obviously just boringly placed the camera in front of every single actor, shot their bits and then threw it to the editor, like, 'Go make a scene out of this garbage, bitch!'. I don't think Ottman did too great of a job either since the cutting is indeed too frequent but man, I understand how tough it must've been for him. This is why the best directors either cut in camera or at least know how to create great individual bits so that then they can play with them in the editing room.
Do you guys remember when all of you thought Green Book was CANCELED because its screenwriter 100% witnessed the true events of Muslims having a kegger in the streets as the towers fell while Peter Farrelly ran through the streets teabagging every fire hydrant? Good times
honestly I would like a bit more respect from this board for predicting Green Book's glorious triumph
Me and a couple others called it’s screenplay and picture win in the predictions thread. I think I was one of three people that voted for it in the “who will win bp poll”
First year I haven't watched the ceremony since The English Patient. Doesn't seem like I missed much, though I am THRILLLLLLLED about Colman. Didn't see that coming. Very happy for Spider-Verse and that's about it.
You'll forever be sorry you missed the emotional, show-stopping powerhouse that was the speech following Vice's Makeup win. A masterclass in public speaking.
LOL
When they just start reading names of the list and stop with passing the paper between themselves, I lost it

I'm not entirely sure that it wasn't an elaborately designed prank. Someone posted on the Youtube clip that they think it was a prank played on the Academy for threatening not to televise their category, because they couldn't have been THAT unprepared.

It has to be staged and a middle finger to the Academy, this just can't happen by accident, apparently they kept speaking after the music and light went down and they wouldn't go, lel
