So despite the fact that at least 6 of tonight's winners were godawful, and Green Book's BP win is outright offensive and truly backwards-looking in all the wrong ways (how do we go from Moonlight to this in two years? ), I actually think this was a pretty stellar ceremony. MVP of the night might just be Glenn Weiss. Amazing how efficient a ceremony can be without a host. Hope you have a wonderful wedding, dude! Seriously, though ... they kept this moving really nicely, there were never any spots that dragged, and while it still ran over three hours, it definitely never felt like it was overstaying its welcome. And this night still gave us so many iconic moments: Regina King getting us started off with her lovely speech. Alfonso being presented Best Director by Guillermo and their iconic hug. (And as Pelle mentioned, Alfonso's BD win is still the first time that award ever has gone to a foreign language film, so at least that signifies something.) Spike Lee jumping on top of Samuel L. Jackson after winning and bringing down the house with a passionate speech. Olivia Colman's surprising victory and her absolutely show-stopping speech. The priceless sexual tension of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga performing "Shallow." Inspiring speeches from Hannah Beachler, Ruth Carter, the Period. End of Sentence. team, etc. Ultimately glad I didn't boycott this year, because there too many gems that I would've missed out on witnessing live.

The winners were a mixed bag, half wonderful and half god-awful with barely any middle ground, but the ceremony itself was fine. Thank you Kevin Hart for staying the fuck away, having no host was actually a blessing in disguise.

This won Best Editing! What the fuck? I genuinely believe a high school student using final cut for the first time could’ve done better editing than what we got in this scene. Oh. My. God. That isn't real, right? Tell me that isn't real.

The Internet made memes about the 25,660 cuts in the Liam Neeson jumping a fence scene in Taken 3 and yet, four years later, the award-giving bodies are throwing awards at Bohemian Rhapsody for doing the exact same thing.

That isn't real, right? Tell me that isn't real. I rewatched it last month with some family and suggested we should take a shot every time there was a cut in this scene but then I realized that would literally kill us.

You know damn well random people on Twitter know more than actual editors about their job.

First year I haven't watched the ceremony since The English Patient. Doesn't seem like I missed much, though I am THRILLLLLLLED about Colman. Didn't see that coming. Very happy for Spider-Verse and that's about it. You'll forever be sorry you missed the emotional, show-stopping powerhouse that was the speech following Vice's Makeup win. A masterclass in public speaking.

It may have been a hot mess (it still is, so John Ottman deserves no credit), but what is the explanation for making so many cuts in just a single scene? I highly doubt they shot the same sequence twice with different directors, given that the budget is a reasonable $50-55 million unlike something like Solo ballooning to $275+ million.

So the first time I didn't watch the show in years, major upsets were happening...
I feel bad for Close. Olivia Colman is the best BA winner since ... Holly Hunter, but I still feel bad for her. I feel less awful for Amy since we all know she'll be back soon, but Close is just ... I guess she can try to be Geraldine Page and win on her 8th nomination.

My poor Glenn Close...I hope she doesn't give up on roles. Roles that Meryl won't steal from her.
Loved Malek's win.
When Mahershala wins...his movie wins.
Loved Olivia's win also, and what a lovely speech.
Don't even talk to me about Best Picture....

Making a more streamlined show made me realise why some people hate the Oscars. Do all those people really think they are changing the world? Are they all in Scientology solving the world's problems? Would love to watch Ricky Gervais' commentary. Olivia Colman was the only genuine non PR infested speech/reaction. Genuinely LOL-ed at the "celebrating one of the most important cinematic moments in history" by Black Panther's Ludwig Göransson. Standing ovations were

Jessica Tandy was 80 when she won her Oscar.Emmanuelle Riva was 85 when she was nominated. There will hopefully be more chances for Glenn to win.Meryl streep is almost 70 and does anyone doubt that she will probably land another dozen nominations before she dies, most of them undeserved?.

I mean, it still is a mess, but I think it’s more inconsistent than outright bad. Ottman’s not a bad editor by any means (look how airtight Days of Future Past is), but I’m guessing he had his favorite parts over others. Since he’s also a pretty active composer, I’m guessing his focus was mainly geared towards the recording booth and concert scenes (which aren’t nearly as bad, and in fact are pretty on point at times), but it’s everywhere else where his attention wanders. It’s just another side effect of that whole movie. Freddie Mercury’s music is amazing, but we don’t get to see anything actually amazing about the man himself.

This is true. I was looking at comments on the Rotten Tomatoes Facebook page and seeing things to the effect of “I’m happy this heartwarming film won over that boring Spanish movie I stopped watching after 15 minutes.”

Yeah, the internet as a whole is so annoyingly impressionable when it comes to movies. All it takes is one obnoxious YouTuber or person on Twitter to make some negative "clever comment" about a movie, and automatically you have thousands and thousands of people blindly repeating what that person says without even seeing the movie most of the time. And while I'm sure the comparison had been made prior, I've been hearing the "Bohemian Rhapsody is just Walk Hard!" remark at least 50 times a day ever since the Honest Trailer came out. The internet sucks.

I was looking at comments on the Rotten Tomatoes Facebook page and seeing things to the effect of “I’m happy this heartwarming film won over that boring Spanish movie I stopped watching after 15 minutes.” Still, at the risk of sounding pretentious, I would prefer having The Oscars be for people who are seriously passionate about movies, not casual filmgoers who see 12 movies per year. I wouldn’t want something I have only a casual interest in be more interested in pandering to me than someone much more passionate about it. Why else do you think Netflix didn't release viewer numbers for Roma. Too many people turned it off after 30mins.
