I feel like skipping this year. I don't want to be one of the ratings they crave so dearly.

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that the 4 categories they chose to eliminate don’t feature a nominee from Disney, ABC’s parent company. I obviously don’t advocate removing any categories but how else do you explain removing live-action short film but not animated short film?

I feel like skipping this year. I don't want to be one of the ratings they crave so dearly. I'll probably end up watching it, but I'm not very excited about it even with Best Supporting Actress and Best Picture still not being locked like the other major categories. The show just seems like it's going to be a mess. While I would be excited about a Roma win for Best Picture, Green Book could win which I'd rather not see. I'm not particularly excited about the acting categories. It will be nice that Glenn Close will finally win, but I wasn't a fan of The Wife even if she was the best part of it. I know award shows are pretty bad in general, but this season it feels like it's going to get even worse because no one wants to host these shows anymore because A) it's a thankless job and/or B) they have something in their past which social media will jump all over them for. So either they go without a host, which I actually think might be a good solution as long as they cut the stupid banter that the award presenters give too. Or they find the worst of the worst.

I’m not saying that didn’t going into the decision process, but they probably want to come off as “fair’ in terms of not picking on anyone.

I’d much rather they cut all of the short film categories. That is if they MUST cut something other than some stupid audience skit or dance number.

Cinematography and editing are right up there in importance with BP/director/screenplay and the acting awards. Those are the main ones. The other ones are "the techs". If you're going to leave some out it absolutely should not have been those. If you want to make the show shorter cut down on the dumb skits.

Utterly insulting. Just get rid of the painfully awkward bits (Kimmel bussing in random people, Ellen taking selfies and ordering pizza, Chris Rock's weird Asian stereotype skit, We Saw Your Boobs, etc), get rid of the endless montages besides the In Memoriam, and for the love of god get rid of the song performances. They go on forever and have very little to do with movies. Done. Three hours. But instead they get rid of two of the most important categories?! Some of my all-time favorite wins are in Editing and Cinematography. Imagine Lubezki winning three back-to-back Oscars offscreen, or Thelma's recognition for Raging Bull, The Aviator, and The Departed deemed unworthy of airtime. Whoever has been in charge of the Academy's decisions this year needs to be fired. It's just one disaster after another.

God they are a mess. I'm definitely skipping this year. Not gonna spend a sleepless night for this disaster. And on top of that this year's nominee batch is meh as well.

They are totally right. I mean: What does cinematography do for a film? A film could easily exist without it. Oh wait... I won't even watch the show as I don't care for shows, but this decision is

There's no cinema without Cinematography and they decided to skip that category out of all?

I guess they thought Cuaron would be given other chances to talk on stage during the night. As for Editing, they probably chose it thinking that most people who watch the show don't really know what editing is or what is it for. It's a shame, though. They could take advantage of such strong categories and make some creative things for the presentations had they any brains.
I don't like this decision at all, but if they really wanted to do this, why not do it with the short film categories? Or do Original Song in just one sitting by bringing the singers of every song on stage to perform a segment of their song for one minute or two?
