Pleasantly shocked. He's def overdue, the best non-winner actor out there. His, much like Close's, is a solid movie-carrying lead turn though not quite the powerhouse say Lincoln or Blue Jasmine were for their leads. But their stature and overdue-ness should make up for that.
The problem is while Close's competition hasn't performed that well through the season, Dafie's has. Objectively, Bale is better this year with less showcase moments than Dafoe imho ...

I don't really get anything about Willem Dafoe - like nothing about him makes sense. He is arguably the best American film actor of his generation - not to me - but you could make a case and that's a tough generation to assess unlike the other recent generations (Washington/Hanks/Penn/Bridges/Cage/Spacey). Never even gets into the discussion He is most certainly not overdue imo - he has never been the best in any of his nodded years or been ripped off in a way where he should have won - he just hasn't. It's not a participation prize to me, he's not really overdue. Not this year either BUT.... It's almost incomprehensible that his great performance this year was nodded - it's a great nomination. It'd be like if Driver was nominated for Paterson or something like that. It would be like nominating an American actor for playing Shakespeare (yeah right), it is that shocking a nod - nothing in the poetic, almost transcendental work he does has anything in it that usually gets nodded. In fact, I'd argue that Roth and in a way maybe Dutronc were "better Van Goghs" (in better films, Roth anyway) maybe but they were not THIS specific Van Gogh. Utterly fascinating to me, I think Bale is best in category but Dafoe forces you to think and assess acting differently in this role.

I would be absolutely shocked that the Academy would actually award the best nominated performance.

I'm shocked you spelled Dafoe correctly.

Totally shocked but in a good way. I mean, I really liked what Malek did in BR and have not watched Vice but I would really prefer Dafoe to win over both of them.
To me, he's way better actor than these two are right now and an Oscar would be something totally deserved for his whole career. But that's not the way the Academy works (usually, I mean) so the better performance of the year is probably Malek's or Bale's.
Anyways, it's gonna be the one or the other, so no Dafoe this year, sorry.

If it happens, I will burn the place to the ground. Give me Malek or you get nothing!
