Here's the nominees:
Period Film
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Jess Gonchor
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” Aaron Haye
“The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie
“First Man,” Nathan Crowley
“Roma,” Eugenio Caballero
Fantasy Film
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” Stuart Craig
“The House With a Clock in Its Walls,” Jon Hutman
“Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre
“Ready Player One,” Adam Stockhausen
Contemporary Film
“A Quiet Place,” Jeffrey Beecroft
“A Star Is Born,” Karen Murphy
“Crazy Rich Asians,” Nelson Coates
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” Peter Wenham
“Welcome to Marwen,” Stefan Dechant
15/22 years, one of the Art Direction Guild winners have gone on to win the Oscar. That's a 68% winning percentage.
On the period side, First Man, The Favourite, and Roma are up for the Oscar. On the fantasy side, we have Black Panther and Mary Poppins Returns up for the Oscar. Nobody on the contemporary side is up for an Oscar.
The Satellite awards picked Mary Poppins, while the Critics Choice picked Black Panther.
The BAFTAs nominated First Man, The Favourite, Fantastic Beasts 2, Mary Poppins 2, and Roma for Art Direction. The only one left off the list was Black Panther.
Here are my predictions/rankings:
PERIOD
1. The Favourite
2. First Man
3. Roma
4. Bohemian Rhapsody
5. Buster Scruggs
Tough call between The Favourite and First Man. Both have gorgeous sets and decorations and up for the BAFTA, but I am going to lean toward the Best Picture nominee, The Favourite. Personally I am rooting for First Man.
FANTASY
1. Mary Poppins Returns
2. Black Panther
3. Fantastic Beasts
4. Ready Player One and House With Clocks
Definitely between MPR and BP. I am leaning toward MPR because it scored a BAFTA nomination.
CONTEMPORARY
1. Crazy Rich Asians
2. A Star is Born
3. A Quiet Place
4. Mission Impossible
5. Welcome to Marwen
Not really a relevant category. None of them are up for the Oscar or BAFTA. I know I generally go with the Best Picture nominee, but one cannot escape the crazy sets in Crazy Rich Asians. I have no clue why CRA is not up for Best Art Direction.
What do you guys got?
