Reading some user reviews, and seeing a lot of complaints about the sound mixing and not being able to understand dialogue. I've never had a real issue with this myself in Nolan's previous films (though I suppose some of the dialogue from Hardy in Dunkirk was a bit difficult to understand at times), but it's interesting that this seems to have become a consistent problem for many people with Nolan's last few films. I wonder if him being against ADR might have something to do with it...

I think Nolan is just very anal in trying to create as much immersion as possible, so much so that he’d rather sacrifice intelligible dialogue for an enveloping aural soundfield. Personally I love the hell out that approach but I can obviously see why people don’t.

All the reviews make it sound like lesser Inception, which is about what I expected. But I'm one of those people who thinks Inception is Nolan's masterpiece, so that doesn't deter me one bit. That's actually pretty much what I'm expecting for the last year or so. But yeah, Inception is Nolan's best film and the best film of the last decade, so a lesser version of it would already be fantastic.

I've been seeing some speculation about the possibility that many or even most major critics in the U.S. might not review Tenet formally. Many major publications are hiring younger critics from Europe or safer spots in the U.S. since a lot of major critics skew older. This has already been the case for LA Times, Deadline, THR.

I thought it was pretty damn good. It has its flaws (more so than most of Nolan's other films) but for me it was just such an enjoyable movie to watch. Gonna need to see it again for obvious reasons. Must mention Ludwig Göransson sountrack, I thought it was quite great. 8/10
As for placing it in Nolan's filmography, probably somewhere middle-to-lower.

Tom Cruise in Nolan's next, PLEASE! I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened yet. Hopefully Nolan will cast Cruise soon.

Photo with great caption potential: “I wish it didn’t have to come to this WB, but if TENET isn’t released in cinemas, Debicki dies.”

Repoets of people walking out in early screenings. Looks like Nolan has finally scored! (Not even being sarcastic since walking out is pleb filtering)

Booked my tickets for next Friday at the Bullock IMAX theater (biggest screen in Texas), which is only about a ten-minute drive from where I live in Austin. Finally got an email from them this morning about reopening after I was considering driving to San Antonio to see it on a smaller IMAX screen. Thankfully, the Bullock is limiting theater capacity to 25% with seat buffers in between groups. Hyped af.

Guys I don’t think “humorless” means not funny. I think they mean it’s joyless. I still don't get it. The last "joyful" film I've seen is something like Sing Street. I felt more joy watching the docking scene in Interstellar alone than in the last few PTA films. Phantom Thread is full of joy.

I'd been avoiding marketing for this but after seeing the behind the scenes bit I'm really liking what I'm seeing. Looks like a classic spy film (despite the sci-fi premise built in) which is very much my kind of thing. The initial reports of a Hitchcockian romantic thriller may not be far off after all, visually it definitely appears to have that sumptuous look to it. It's showing where I live right away September 3
I'm not put off by some negative reviews at all. When letterboxd is universally circle jerking something it almost always ends up being boring and safe.
I also don't care about the "humorless" criticism, not every movie needs a wise cracking raccoon sidekick. And as pacinoyes alluded to modern film critics are humorless so they're not ones to talk about that.

So apparently IMAX's David Keighley has confirmed that 50% of Tenet was shot on 70mm IMAX. Down from 75% for Dunkirk. But this translates to about 75 mins of footage, which is basically the same amount for Dunkirk.

First decent, non-print interview with Nolan that I've come across for Tenet. Love that he cites To Live and Die in L.A. as an inspiration for the car chase.
